Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do remember that I went off route a bit to Streator and got a motel that night, so it must have been taken west of probably Ancona.

Wenona, Odell, and Henry are areas that I ride in a few times a year. Wenona and Odell are pan flat. I attended a pre-design meeting a few months ago for the replacement of the bridge at Henry. It's a scary bridge for cyclists.

If you didn't have to hose down, how much fun could you have had?

The hummus I've been making has not been right. Using limes, as lemons are a hard to find item. There are lemons in the house, tahini in the fridge, and cooked garbanzos on the stove.

I remember it being super flat. I remember all of the IL section as being super flat. (We crossed the Mississippi at Davenport, IA, after a rest day at a host's house. During the day off I went to the John Deere place.) Another thing I remember was passing some sort of poultry farm. It was really hot and humid. The smell being vented from the buildings was nearly overpowering.

But I have only a vague recollection of crossing the river at Henry. Just looked at the bridge on Google Maps. I am assuming I was with a few others of the group and that we crossed together.

It's a 72. The difference between those years is the grill and I think everything else is interchangeable. I worked for a guy who raced drag boats and we put engines in Ford trucks for his friends so they could tow their boats quickly. There were a bunch of old Ford trucks running around with built 460s under their hoods.

Maybe they could build a velodrome instead? That would attract snooty track cyclists.

Whew! A word of advice to the Zwifters that have recently started riding with C. Cadence: yeah, don't let your mind wander through the Titan's Grove section. This morning, I jumped in mid-climb, which is pretty sedate with CC, but, as I was fiddling with giving Ride Ons or something, we crested, there was the surge, and I found myself instantly split on the downhill and it took some ass-bustin' to catch back on to the pack.

That's what I've said. There's not one in the entire region.

Yeah. If you're out tooling around and want to join that group, about the only way that works is to have them swarm you from behind, so you can get up to speed to join the pack. If they pass you going the opposite direction and you try to U-turn and catch up, you'll burn a lot of matches to do it.

Were you in the rollers? I find those confounding, switching back and forth between +7% and -7%.
