The Super Maxy crank is gorgeous. Beautifully polished.

Thanks gents. So, is the lateral span of most FDs about the same?

Go after a new spindle or is there an FD out there that would provide the reach I need?

Restored my 81' about a year ago. The bike is a great bike with the new gearing on it. I'm with the others. Contact your LBS to make sure you get the right size gear. If you screw up, you'll have no end of problems with shifting.

How much clearance is there between the granny and the chainstay? Could be you're just too far out from the correct chainline.

Surprised it didn't get mentioned earlier, but you could keep your factory crankset and swap chainrings. I believe those Super Maxy Cranksets are 110 BCD, so you could go with something like 34/ 48 and have much better low end range and probably play well with original derailleurs.

Need to keep the triple on it.

Chainline distance to the middle ring is 51mm. Mr. Sheldon says it should be 45mm(?).

I pulled the crankset off and measured. My calipers measured 125mm edge to edge of the square taper (didn’t measure where the threaded ends started on each side).

Makes sense based on this.

Can anyone tell me what problems I might run into moving from the 125mm to the 118mm?

Nothing beats doing it right. A 51mm chainline is just wrong, period.
Make it right and it will work.
Cannot imagine what problems you might encounter by using the correct BB for the crankset.
