Which Specialized Model bikes were rolling with Dura Ace 7800 group?
Hello all,
I hope all is going well and you could be of help. I'm in the process of getting a Specialized bike warrantied through Specialized and they gave me an offer that good, but I'm hoping I could do better with a counter offer. Their first offer is great really, I just don't think it will "fit" well with my DA 7800 groupset. I'm thinking something that's a year or two old and probably carbon.
I'm wondering if you could give me an idea of when the DA groupset was hanging off some of their model and what models those were?
Any and all responses is most welcomed and appreciated.

what was the original frame? was it Aluminum or Carbon?
what do you mean by "fit"? You want your 7800 only on a higher end frame?

I've got DA7800 with the exception of the crankset on my 2012 E5 Allez frameset, and it's fine. It's my race bike. I'm seriously considering getting the current version of the frameset - I'm told it's a major improvement by a guy who's already done it - and moving everything over. If it were me, I'd go for it.

And yes mechanically everything would fit. Not crazy about OSBB adapters to make my crank fit though. I'd really like to see if they would go with a frame that is a year or two old but higher in grade than the Allez.

The original frame was the 2008 Allez Compact. It had seat stays, seatpost, and fork all out of carbon. By "fit" I mean the correct period stuff on the frames. This new frame they are offering doesn't come with DA 7800. None of the current lineup from Specialized have the 7800 as an option.

As for the adaptor, Shimano now makes one for OSBB. I have two friends who built up 2014 Specialized Venges with full DA9000, including the cranksets, using that adaptor, and it works better than previous versions by other makers.
ETA: As for looks, since it shifts so well, I could care less. A lot of folks kept 7800 instead of updating to 7900 because the older version works better. I've got 7900 on another bike, and it's true.

That's because the 7800 was discontinued in 2009 (I think). The next iteration, 7900, was discontinued last year. The current iteration is 9000, and is 11 speed.

If they are offering a smartweld allez take it and run. 7800 will look just as good on it as anything else they have offered in a while and it is reportedly a fantastic frame. It will be a big improvement over what you have.

Here's the link to their archive. DA was limited to the higher-end bikes, so even if they have the frameset in stock, you'll have to be pretty good at convincing them that they want to do it.
Yeah I saw that option, but only thing is that I don't know what all the road models are. Take a look at 2009 for instance, https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/archive/2009/# I know what a few of the MTB and road models are, but hardly all of them, or most of them.

The Allez is basically the Tarmac executed in aluminum. The Roubaix is Specialized's carbon "endurance" bike. The Venge is Specialized's "aero" bike, which I think came out in 2011.

If they had five year old frames to hand out, they would have offered to give you a direct replacement instead of a new model.

I doubt any of the Allez in 2008 came equipped with 7800.
I roll with 7800 on my main rig, & I love it!
Take the replacement, & get the build going!

Gotta be honest, since that whole hoopla with Volagi I was turned off by them but I can't deny they make great saddles.
Anyway, interesting name on the color scheme: Ano Black Murder - Sm Frmset
Someone here has the Keyline color scheme and I think it's awesome.

Yeah the Keyline color is what I'm looking at if I go with the first offer. If I get it, I'll post up some pics.

Keyline + 7800 sounds fantastic to me. I really wouldn't go any other way if they have offered that. Again, it is a much better frame than you had. Should look killer. I would finish it with some silver dura ace hubs laced to black tb14 rims. Give it sort of an early 2000s spring classic look.

I understand it's BB30. I'm pretty sure the guys who are running DA9000 cranks on their new bikes told me they were made by Shimano. They're both mechanics at my LBS. It could be a recent development, or I could have misunderstood them.

Nope, they are wrong. Shimano has never and probably will never produce an adapter for another company's standards. I know cuz I really prefer Shimano cranks, and my new Allez has an OSBB so I went with Hollowgram cranks. Would have preferred 6800 otherwise.

Shimano is leaving money on the table by not making OSBB cranks. pretty much, all new bikes aren't coming with shimano cranks anymore. If they were smart... they would adopt it.
