Mystery Bike

Hi All,

I just picked up the bike below and I was hoping to get some help in identifying. When I got it the owner told me it was a Peugot and that...it had been professionally repainted. There in lies the biggest delima, also it has no S/N.

All that aside it is an awesome bike and in great shape.
Specs:
Campy Headset, DT Shifters, FD, Hubs
Suntour RD
Mafac Brakes
KyoKuto Pedals
Pivo Stem
Mavic Marque Deposee Wheels

The Mafac brakes and the Pivo Stem lead me to believe that it really is a Peugot, but with out some adives I don't know...

The Pics- Lmk if you'd like more

Are there two little holes under the BB where a little plate with the serial number might have been riveted on before the repaint?

Who made the dropouts? What's the seatpost size? What markings are on the bottom bracket cups?

It appears to have Simplex dropouts (= French)... I'll go with a Gitane or Peugeot.

There are on holes on the bb, and to be honest not sure the correct measurement for the seat post inside to inside?

Also not sure what the bb cups are...can you describe?

I think with the Simplex dropout, combined with the Pivo stem and Stronglight crank, is pretty strong evidence that we have a Frenchy here. I'm thinking Gitane but didn't they have a seat stay cablestop bridge?

Coould just be that the front wheel is canted a bit, but the fork looks bent and too close to the down tube for comfort.

I'm gonna say Peugot, but then again I don't think Peugots had a serial number plate on the bottom of the BB? I think they had a paper label with the serial number on it taped onto the bottom of the BB?

Yeah, but the scary part is the repaint, orig owner could have been covering up a bent top/bottom tube! I truly hope this is not the case and the frame is fine. but take a close look at the frame just to be sure. Hopefully all you have to do is change out the fork.

Here's a PFN and PKN-10 maybe it'll help you out a bit.

Thanks for the help! On close inspection I don't see a bend in the fork. I might not know quite what to look for though. I guess in the end the best name for it is Frenchy....

those are BCM (Bocama) lugs and the forkcrown is similar to one favored by Gitane...Simplex forged dropouts...stay caps look like a Gitane "crimped" treatment...I'd say it's a Gitane, but it's not exactly like any model I'm familiar with. Maybe you should peruse the catalogs at www,gitaneusa.com and see if you find a good match.

Looks to me like the rear-stays took an impact. Not sure of it's vintage, but it needs a good going-over.

I love your bike !! Every Peugot PX 10 i ever saw had the same Strong-light star crank. The Sun tour cyclone is not original. The original derailleur would have been a plastic simplex. Also the Campy down tubes, and Campy Front derailleur are not original. This is definltly a Peugot though, but the question is... a Peugot what... PX 10 LE?? maybe.
