People on old bikes with visor helmets, lights, and panniers = Freds (Wilmas?)
People on hybrid bikes with suspension on the MUP aren't "real" cyclists.
People on X-Mart specials are poor/ newbies
BMXers are cretins
Mountain bikers are crazy and disrespectful
All cyclists are *****exual.
People on fixed gears are hipster poseurs/ messenger wannabes
Real messengers have death wishes.
Roadies are all wealthy middle aged super-poseurs trying to look like pros

Commuter cyclists are too poor to drive or lost license for DUI/DWI

Let me put it this way:
Stereotypes are for people who like to put down other people. They like to put down other people to make themselves feel better about themselves. They have this need because they are insecure and self conscious about their appearance, personal life, their general failure in life as human beings.
Thus, stereotypes are for low life losers.
That is as clear of understanding some of you able to receive as possible, without getting a degree in psychology.

noncyclists or non forum cyclists have never heard of a fred and their perception of a cyclist has to do with there clothes and hair.
1: the biggest stereotype is that bikes come from walmart and cost less than $150
2: next is that your car is broke or something
3: if your on a road bike in spandex your exercising (and strange) however gastric bypass surgery is 'normal medical procedure'
I've been asked if I needed a ride to work even though I ride a new cannondale and drive a late model vehicle sometimes also. I'm sure they thought it came from walmart.

People can be so entertaining sometimes.

The only stereotype that I haven't seen here is: Riding an el-cheapo mountain bike with no helmet = very unpredictable

A general assumption from non-cyclists is that I'm crazy for riding in any weather conditions, pushing myself to my maximum physical and mental conditions, and spending any and all extra available time and money on cycling.
Luckily, the general assumtion from cyclists is that I am quite normal, and I can live with that.

If you're riding a bike, you must be some welfare loser druggie junkie bum, because you probably can't afford a car and therefore are not a valued contributing member of society.
Or you're a big child who refuses to grow up and be responsible.

Guys, I thought this thread was for stereotypes, not truths .
The only one that I got is that bikers who wear spandex are gay. So go for looks over comfort.

Since I ride old bikes with baskets and panniers and what not, in preference to driving a car, I guess I'm somewhere between the Fred and the hippie sterotypes
(I have a t-shirt somewhere that says "Pinko Commie ****" )

Most of the cyclists I see are middle aged people trying to get in shape or stay in shape. The rest are out for a holiday ride, an 'airing out', so to speak. Some are commuters. These are so positive, I have to congratulate all of them. And all of you! bk
