Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nastiest Bike Crash Ever

I just watched a guy at the back of the Tour de France ride into a road sign, part of that ridiculous road furniture (in the middle of the road) the peloton is forced to negotiate all the time on French roads in the Tour. He SEVERED his Specialized road bike frame in friggin HALF. He walked away, apparently OK. See if you can catch that on TV. Man, that was amazing.

Somebody...have mercy on those with no pay-tv...post a vid link...please.

Edit: I'm sure if he hadn't been on some piece of plastic from China the world would still be flat.

Saw an EDS rider faceplant at Alkek velodrome at 40mph. Did any of you see the movie Mask?

I've never quite seen one like that. That was better than the Milan San Remo dude T-boning the telephone pole @ 38 mph. That guy got hurt worse. This dude today just looked shocked and bruised, but I think he did escape serious injury. Not his bicycle. It was de-tubitated.

I don't ever recall seeing a CF bicycle frame severed in half. This bike looked like a folding bicycle unassembled after this crash. You kind of have to see it to believe it.

All you see on the video is a shattered bicycle flying in the air, and then a team mechanic carrying away the wreckage afterwards as the rider limps away in the middle of the road. That certainly makes the Doctor Destructo Highlight Reel.

Watching today's stage now but haven't see it yet.

BTW, I know the rider that hit the tree a few stages ago abandoned (wrist injury I believe) but I haven't heard much else. The helicopter was the only camera angle available and it looked like it could have been much worse.

that was pretty nuts, it looked like he got flung forward in a clean way, and he must have tucked and rolled well because he got up with little harm it looked like. The bike though, soooooo mangled.

he fared better because the rider was above the sign, so while the bike stopped, he kept on going.

I'm surprised that none of the riders around were hurt from shrapnel. I mean, we all know that carbon fiber explodes like an atomic grenade if you look at it wrong.

Protip: Don't hit signs.

Another Protip: Carbon fiber is bad for you.

Was it a Specialized frame? I thought it looked like a Cervelo. Either way, one of the most amazing crashes with no apparent major injury I've seen.

That bike would have exploded no matter what the material it was made from. Going from 35ish mph to 0 almost instantly will have that effect on things.

According to Cycling News, it was Gerolsteiner rider Sven Krauss on a Specialized.

Where's the carbon vs anti-carbon flame war?

Can't wait.

The carbon lovers will say something like: "any bike in the WHOLE WORLD, made from any material, would've also busted in half in the same situation"

Just like they did last year when they tried to defend to taco-ing Lightweight

Gerolsteiner rolls on Specialized's finest.

Nah, if he had hit that sign with a bike my Ibis Titanium it would have simply catapulted the dude backwards all the way to Girona. But it would have left a mark.

there was a crash in one of the spring classics this year where the rider went into a curb straight on at full speed without seeing it. His bike exploded and he flew threw the air.

Yeah that was the most heinous non-injury bike crash I've seen in a while. The announcers were scared at first but when they saw the rider up and bouncing around they started laughing in amazement.

Same reaction from me! Anyone know if he got back into the race? I'll post Youtube link when I can get it, but it just happened an hour ago so...
