Dream a little Dream for Me
Here we have a whole bike for $100 with undoubtedly some good parts, then we have a guy who is offering a rear wheel with no axle with no indication of how much wear has been done to the rims. Lately, especially, I have been finding it is much cheaper to buy whole bikes than parts. How about you?

I tried that. Earlier this year I bought a Carabela for ten buck because I wanted the crank arm caps and I figured that was cheaper than getting them on eBay. I thought I'd salvage a few of the other parts but once I got the bike home, I decided I'll make a project out of fixing it up. I'm afraid if I try that too often, I'll have more bikes than I have room for.

Haha yes on paper, it always makes more sense to get donor bikes. I've rebuilt several donor bikes at this point, it's an illness. And then you need donor bikes for your donor bikes. It doesn't always make a difference, but I try to make sure donor bikes are not in my size.

Early spring I bought a (mostly...) whole bike for $10 because it had some decent Mafac brake hoods I wanted for my PX-10...... Yeah, well, I've since stripped & painted the frame, polished everything, currently rebuilding the wheels for it! When I discovered it was a full Super Vitus 971 EX frame I just couldn't relegate it to donor status...

The "I can sell it for more than I paid." excuse only worked twice. Every bike purchase is a donor as they need donation of parts to become complete to my desire.

I just did that. I needed a set of wheels for my Raleigh Pro and it was cheaper to buy a complete bike than a set of decent vintage wheels that I could use on my Raleigh. The bonus was a nice group of parts I could use on other bikes that are in the Que . Nothing wrong with that! The frame , although very nice high end bike of unknown origin , is way too small for me so I won't build it up. I will let someone else do that once I finish getting what I want off the donor.

Yea , I usually don't sell anything and I now have a lot of bikes . I have sold 3-4 bikes and that was quite a while ago but I did ok . It is getting to that point where I will maybe start thinning but not just yet!

On more than one occasion, I have bought inexpensive bikes for the parts. After I have retrieved the parts I wanted, I'll put the bike back together with functional parts and donate it. It's tempting to try to keep them all, but then I spend more time maintaining the fleet than riding. As my collection has grown, I have become more selective in what I bring home.

I have a list. It has been nearly unchanged since it was created several years ago. It did grow. The list is not one that is easily checked off for two reasons, quality and size of what is needed/wanted, and home infrastructure dynamics.
