Drivetrain Swap Question

I’ve got a 1983 Miyata 310 in pretty nice shape, equipped with Shimano Golden Arrow derailleurs and Dia-Compe brakes. I really like the aesthetic of the Shimano Tricolor components, and would like to use them on the Miyata. I’d like to keep the 5-speed cassette, or possible go to 6. Straight swap or in my ignorance am I missing something? What would I need to do to make it work? Thanks in advance.

It's likely a freewheel, not a cassette. Surprised your '83 is a 5-speed, but maybe it wasn't until '84 the model moved to 6. Personally, I'd go to 6 or even 7. Should be an easy swap to Tricolor.

You need to check your OAL of the drop outs to see if they are 120 or 126, 6 speed was the jump unless you find a Suntour Ultra which can fit in a 120 OAL. Even so, you may have to space the hub with a swap, NDS to DS to get the clearance and change the dish of the wheel.
It not a big deal if you have some mechanical experience.
I have not run into a 5 speed cassette.

Not an expert, but I think you will run into a few issues.

The shifters...you won't be able to index on the rear, but could run them with current friction shifters (but then you are mismatched). I don't think any tricolor shifters ever had a friction option? Also, not sure I ever saw a banded shifter for tricolor so you would need braze ons? Also an opportunity for brifters...

The bolts for the brakes...are your current Dia Compes bolt or recessed. All tri-color was recessed I think. Levers will be no problem.

The 5 speed freewheel cogs might be too thick for the chain that would be thinner for the 7 speed pulleys on the tri-color.

Honestly, an upgrade would be cool, but you might need a new rear wheel with a freehub, so you can source a 7 speed cassette. Then you get the full benefits of the excellent tri-color stuff.

If spacing is made 126, and the hub is friendly, maybe an Ultra 7 freewheel could be wriggled into indexing.

Like I said, I am certainly not an expert so more knowledgeable folks will chime in.

EDIT: Does the 310 have that top braze on mount for aero shifters?

I put Tri-color on my 1984 310 a couple years ago. I have since changed it back to the Golden Arrow components. I had to do some modification to the index shifters to allow them to be used on the aero-mounts. The aero-mounts have 4.5 mm threads instead of the more common 5 mm. I found an old pair of stem shifters that had the correct bolts. After removing the plastic wing nuts, I could tighten them with a nut driver. The wheels were already 126 mm uniglide 7 speed, so they slipped right in.

1984 Miyata 310, with SIS and Tri-color drivetrain.

SIS shifter on Shimano top mount base.

Shimano did offer an aero mount for indexed shifters, both clamp and braze options.

If the bike has side-mounted braze-ons, Shimano's weird shifter bosses would have been used for Golden Arrow levers, so the odd-size bolts would be needed to secure index levers (using Shimano's chromed, concave mounting escutcheons).

Where the hell did the name “Tri-color” come from? You mean Shimano 600EX?

Tri-color is almost as bad as “brifters.”

Lots of great thoughts here, appreciate everyone taking the time. I knew it was freewheel and not cassette, but it was late and I’m old and had been up 21 hours. Plus I don’t know from Shineola. Anyway, stumbled on some really nice NOS in-the-box 600 Arabesque today. Hmmm, this stuff would look great on the Miyata...
