I tried out this tail light I ordered today. I love it ! Super bright, can see it from a long ways off. Soilid construction.

I have several of the CygoLite models. One thing I like about them is that they come with both seatpost and seat stay mounts. Some lights only come with seat post mounts, which won't fit on some of my bikes because of the saddlebag.
Also, no matter what light you get, make sure it is securely mounted to aim directly at motorists behind you. I often see bikes with tail lights aimed down toward the ground, or in all different directions when attached to a saddle bag or backpack.

I know this WAY out of your $75 price range. BUT if you are considering stepping out of the range, I can't recommend the Garmin Varia RTL510 enough. Bright light. Radar. Ties in with your Garmin head unit. Only downside is the light is way out of your stated price range.

I completely agree. I purchased both the Garmin UT800 headlight and the Varia RTL510 Radar Taillight about a year ago and have been highly impressed with the combination. The RTL510 can be found for $150 which, while expensive does provide the radar functionality which I have found to be extremely valuable. It's worth the premium to have this functionality in addition to being a taillight. Plus if you already have the UT800 and have linked it to a garmin head unit, the Radar Taillight will integrate into the lighting network and automatically adjust to conditions, one adjustment being an increase in brightness and flashing as a vehicle approaches, further improving visibility to those drivers. I believe this is a great safety feature, which hopefully would be a good way to convince your wife it's worth it for your increased safety.
I am still working on it! What is the difference between the 510 and the 515?

I read a review that this is two 175 lumen lights - and they add them together to get 350 lumens. I contacted Cygolite and they confirmed that yes, it's max lumens is 175, for each of the two. It does not work that way - adding lumens of two emitters.
So the Hotshot 200 lumen single light is the brightest they make. Almost got suckered into their new math on the Hypershot models.

OP, one more worth considering: Lezyne Strip Drive 150.
I had to replace a light back in July and went with one of these. Fantastic light and well within your budget. I've been using it nearly every day for early morning rides and it's been great! And every Lezyne product I've owned has been excellent.

IMO, something making sounds every time something approached from the rear would be waaay too annoying.

Two recommendations for you. The CatEye Rapid series are good value for a reasonable output. I have two on one bike, running one in constant and one in flashing mode.
For a more expensive but absolutely top notch solution I would really recommend the Exposure Blaze. It seems much brighter than the headline 80 lumens would suggest, it is light, compact and very well put together, has a good run time, a pseudo-random flash pattern and flares up under braking.

Keep at it. Now that I've had the Garmin for about a year, I've really come to appreciate the radar and don't think I'd ever go back to only having a light. It gives me such peace of mind knowing how many cars are coming and how close they are with a quick glance.

The only reason I am not considering it is the traffic here is so busy that it would constantly go off. Since I know the cars are there, I am focusing on cars seeing me and riding on streets with wide shoulders.

its not about the value, it the fact my wife is a CPA and its all about dollars...lol its just how my house is. I have been watching ebay now for a 510 at a discount type deal.

Sorry, I didn't mention....You can be steady Red or flashing red, steady blue or flashing blue or a red/blue flash. So the option not to use blue is there. I am wondering if there is an police officer that would pull you over for trying to be seen and avoid an accident.
