Have you used Strava for turn by turn route direction?

Hi,

I want to follow a Strava route to a place 40 miles out. I am not a Strava subscriber yet. Just want to make sure if I can follow turn by turn direction on a Strava route once I subscribe. Has anyone done it?

Thanks!

What kind of device are you using for said?

I cannot recall using Strava for this when I subscribed, but did do so with Map My Ride and Google Maps via an Android device. I attempted at one point to make my Garmin (which is supposed to support this feature) do so, and that was an exercise in futility and frustration.

Most folks I know prefer Ride With GPS for route instructions, Strava to record.

After subscribing for five or six years, I don't remember if I ever planned a ride in Strava.

I've done a number of rides planned in Ride with GPS. Settings on the source during download (turn alert 100 yards before turn) and the device seem more important than where the course comes from.

I am paid strava user. It's not turn by like you are used to from google maps or apple maps.

You get a map with a blue dot showing your location and it's up to you to keep the blue dot on the red line on the map.

If you want turn by turn get a bike computer like garmin or wahoo and load your routes on there. 5+ hour ride will kill your phone battery while in gps mode.

I ride with an earbud in my curbside ear and have used google maps for audible turn by turn instructions. With the phone in a holster with screen off I get about 6 hours of battery life. Your Mileage May Vary.

And with the directions set to "bicycle" mode it's very convenient, offering bike-friendly routes and paths inaccessible to cars. BE sure to preview the rout before setting off...it's not perfect.

I use map my ride or ride with gps for my routing. I then upload it onto my garmin and Strava will record it. After I finish the route, I save it and Strava will have it there the next time I ride the same route. It is pretty easy to get it set up . i also send a beacon to my wife's phone and she can follow my ride from the house, in case she has to come pick me up for some reason.

I'm a Strava subscriber and I have connected my Garmin and Strava accounts together. Route planning seems easier on Strava, and it is easy to send the rout too my Garmin. But my one and only experiment with turn by turn seemed to make my Garmin want me to turn around and go home on an out and back as soon as I got a block away from the house. I suspect it would have done well for point A to point B. But until I finally decide to run away from home, I need to plan to come back.

I use Komoot in a similar way - it will do audio directions with the screen off.
If you sign up (free) you get maps for one area for free - Greater London in my case so It's cost nothing so far.
I quite like the route planning web interface.

I’ve used the Maps app on my IPhone for turn by turn directions when I get lost. I just set it to Bicycle, plug in the destination and hit GO. But it doesn’t work for route planning, just rescue.

What's strava? 😄 don't care for it that much mostly because Its a distraction or I forget to turn it on, etc.

l make gps maps using Ride with gps, and using All Trails. My Hammerhead Karoo picks these up no problem ( through wifi connection) and ready to use in no time or hassle for turn by turn guidance and more, like percent incline, how far to the top of the hill etc. It is Android based unlike Garmin ( don't know about wahoo) I once purchased a $700 Garmin unit, wasn't working properly and I returned it for full refund.

Very Happy with my Hammerhead Karoo. I Highly recommend it.

I do this rarely since I rarely ride in a city or other urban environment but I have used the routing this way a few times- I usually take someones Strava route and then save it to my Strava account. Then, I use my Garmin 1030 to follow the route. It will show you where all the turns are and if you are following the right line/route. The last time I tried this was on an unfamiliar mountain route last year. I never use my phone for routing or cycling. I prefer Garmin computers since I am used to them and I love the larger screen of the 1030 Plus. I can see it much better when riding than the smaller screens most have.

Strava does turn by turn for Bolt v2 and Elemnt, not Bolt v1. I would assume for Garmin devices it is similar, i.e. some will and maybe some won't.

Don't use a phone for long rides for gps navigation. Battery drain plus the risk of falling a phone usually is more expensive to replace.
