Addiction 2022.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mrs. rjones28 learned to drive on a stick shift car -- her mother's MK 1 Golf (aka Rabbit). The only cars we've owned with automatic transmissions have been those with none available. Like minivans and Mercedes-Benz.

In the interest of disclosure, I should note that my clock is routinely cleaned by a couple of much stronger guys my age.

You'll be in for a shock if you ever go electric.

Mrs. GeneJockey learned how to drive a stick back around the time she moved out here in '82. She then proudly drove nothing but manuals till she got her Sienna in 2001. After that, she's sometimes drive my Subaru, with its manual and she actually enjoyed it, but when it came time to buy the Dodge, I'd been complaining so much about having to deal with a clutch in traffic that she threatened grievous bodily harm if I didn't get an automatic. So I did. I sometimes wish I'd gotten the manual - more fun, and longer legs on the freeway - but the old Mercedes NAG5 that Chrysler got from its brief marriage to Daimler Benz works fine, though when it manual mode you have to pull the paddles or flick the lever 1/2 second before you want to shift.

Youngest guy too?

Once I'm off the back, I just try to keep the power steady and ≥ Z4 and get my pathetic little workout.

Yes it is. They regroup 2 or 3 x in 25 mi. It's very friendly and fun, but over my head, especially on days like today when faster guys show up.

Something to work towards! First, to keep up. Then, to be one of those guys that causes little groans of consternation when you roll up to the start.

I'm going into the city in a few minutes and expect to see a radical difference there.
Well color me shocked and amazed. The mask situation in the big city is exactly the same.
Fear?
Or simple mistrust?

I wish people here were defiantly masking. I have a bunch of coworkers on-site in CLT and one of the vendors is out with Covid. Did one of his people catch it and is spreading it right now to everyone there? Who knows! Glad I’m home though.

Todays ride felt fantastic up to the point I thought I was going to pass out. I usually eat at mile 30 but I didn’t want to stop, waiting til mile 68 was a massive mistake.

Bought some reese’s and a coke. Instantly felt like I was going to vomit and had to cut the ride short.
