Mavic 500 Hubset - NOS - 100/126 - 28h

Hello-
Up for sale is a set of NOS Mavic 500 hubs with NOS Mavic lightweight skewers. The sealed bearings are absolutely perfect! The hubs are 28h and have 100/126 spacing. I was able to thread a British freewheel onto the hub.

These hubs rival Campagnolo Record of the same time period with easily replaceable sealed bearings, if needed.
Most don't know the difference between the different model numbers, as seen in the bay listings. 550 rear hubs have the bearing placed under the threads near the end of the hub body for improved axle support. Some of the listings on the bay identify the 550 as a 500, not so.

It is my understanding that a fully exposed drive-side bearing (i.e. sans cover) is a dead giveaway for a 550?

makes one wonder if using an 8v freewheel would provide a chance of not bending an axle. Note the larger diameter in any case.

I have these hubs laced on to 28H Wolber Profil 20 rims for my Vitus Carbone and they are excellent! Glass smooth bearing feel and bomb proof shell construction!
I've also been hoarding a 32H set for a future French wheel build. There's just nothing out there that compares to their quality.. Only thing that I never did get used to is the cam over profile the Mavic skewers have. They just don't seem to have the same secure feel that Campy or Simplex skewers had when they are closed to lock the wheels on the dropouts. Never had a wheel pull out on me while riding though, so the skewers work fine, otherwise.
28H isn't an issue if you use a nice, rigid rimset with a little bit of depth on them, like the Wolber Profil 20's. My wheelset had remained true for many miles now.

Skewers are more than details, especially when leaning towards 'limited availability & NOS'. Replacing shimaNos.
Maybe one day I can get around to polishing out a crank and assembling it up with the ders+shifters.

I have those wheels and hubs on my Medici 32h with bladed spokes. I have to say, although I love the aesthetic of Campagnolo, they are better. No maintenance and roll better once they have some miles on them. If I were building a set of wheels , I would use these.
