Is there such a thing? They need to be padded on the bottom.

Currently I wear these (the long trouser version) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203791153182 but on a warm summer day they are too warm. These are cheap and dirty chinese trousers (I used to get them for about £20; they are a bit more now) and the zips disintegrate after a few months, but they are the best I have found so far. In the winter I wear pricey waterproof trousers (about £90) over them and that works well.

The stinging nettles are all over the tracks now. I even have to wear thicker gloves

Not sure about stinging nettles, but for insects you'll need something like blue jeans or heavy denim to protect you from the stingers. I'd say just ride faster, but I've been clipped by a red wasp coming at me in late summer -- son of a gun aimed for me and got my arm with a passing sting.

Quickdry travel and hiking pants come to mind.
The smooth polyester or nylon fabric won't catch nettles and loose fit leg makes it challenging for insects to sting and bite.

They should be breathable to keep you cool and most are convertible to shorts with zippers to remove the lower part of the leg.

A lite pair of convertible pants from Columbia, for example, should be good enough. The advantage there is that the legs zip on and off.

Some 15 years ago I was backpacking and came upon part of the trail that was lined with them. Suckers hurt. I was too lazy to go in my pack and zip on my pants legs. Poor decision. The GF and I had noticeable marks on our lower legs.

Right; yes. These are "90% Polyester, 10% Spandex" which is what basically all lightweight biking trousers ("pants") are made of, but while these are comfy and very light, they are a challenge if the temp is above about +20C. They don't seem to be breathable; they fill up with sweat.

I was wondering if there is some other material which is breathable and would keep stinging nettles out.

I had some mens cycling pants by lulu lemon for a while they were pretty good. I forget the model. they may not make them anymore. they weren't cheap, tho

They look great but aren't padded; they are designed for running.

Nobody seems to be making long trousers which are padded and breathable.

Yeah Convertible pants - I have some lightweight ones from Campmor, which have held up well for many years... still would use the velcro legs bands if using for cycling, even though they have leg cuff cinches... also would use some 'light cycling shorts', or what I got just a few years back, cycling underwear - sortta like cycling shorts with a chamois, but very light weight spandy weave which airs well...
