Friction resistance training stand
This is a maintenance question…not about the bike, the training stand. Hoping someone in this forum can lend some knowledge. So I picked up the pictured stand for free on a swap site. The person I got it from isn’t a cyclist and didn’t know any particulars about it. It was in her parents’ garage and presumed it was in good working order. The shifting cable attachment seems to be functioning properly, and I can see something move inside housing. But it doesn’t seem to change the resistance of the roller at all. I’m not afraid to take the thing apart to inspect. But my question is…is there a spring of some kind inside that housing that may be difficult to re-seat if it’s taken apart?

This is a magnetic resistance unit, and the cable moves the metal plates inside closer or further away from the magnets to increase/reduce the resistance. The unit needs to be rotating to feel the difference, as the magnetic resistance gets greater as the rotational speed increases. If you just spin it with your hand you won't be able to tell the difference because it won't be rotating fast enough to generate resistance.
