Haha.I made the bars as a joke to see what it would feel like to ride a bike with super narrow 2008 style bars. I gave the bike to a friend as it was a spare parts bike and he put wide MTB bars on it.

Phil Wood logo, Purple chainring bolts and a blue stem, fun valve caps, ya got me. Even though I find flat bar quill stemmed track bikes in general odd looking.

None of it goes together, so it all goes together. There's just something about all those clean flat lines. Glad you got a kick out of the build.

The only odd thing to me is the chainring bolts. The bike otherwise looks fine, it wasn't purposefully "thrown together" like mine was. The only thing that matches on my bike is the gray thermolite pedals and front Tiagra brake. The tires don't even match, they just have the same tread.

1976 Motobecane Grand Jubile'

1989 Miyata 312 Fixed Gear


The Moto is a SS and the Miyata is FG. Both are incredibly smooth and comfortable. The Jubile' was from back when Motobecane was using Reynolds 531 and hand brazing their upper tier bikes. The workmanship is extremely nice. The Miyata, being a 312 was on the lower end of that tier, with the 912 being at the top. I had the opportunity to see and ride a 912 after I had bought the 312 and honestly I wouldn't trade. It just "fits" and is super quiet. I've said before it is probably the last bike in my stable that I will sell. Hopefully not for a long time yet!

c.1971 metric-gauge 531 Gitane Tour de France with Kogswell hubs, Phil Wood BB, Stronglight 93s running 45x17 fixed. I bought this to be a family beach week beater and it has become my favorite grab-n-go bike. Somehow it is the absolute smoothest running bike in the stable.


1973 Raleigh Competition, 531 with rapid-taper stays, running Dingle fixed cog/Dos Eno 2-speed freewheel, giving 70-in fixed pavement, 60-in fixed gravel, 60-in general freewheeling and 51-in light singletrack gearing.

My $20 mystery frame from the co-op and $5 DeepVs from the same. I laced them with 1.8-1.5-1.8 spokes for one of the lightest dv wheelsets you'll find. When I'm feeling up to it, I like to "fixie ninja" swoop some of the weekend warrior-types on my city's mtb trails. They never hear me coming....

I kid, of course. My thoughts exactly on how smooth this bike rides.





It's been built a couple of different ways, with drops as well as porteur bars. The top tube is fairly long for me so I like this bike more with the porteurs, the reach with drops is a bit much.

This frameset is currently hanging in my bedroom because I swapped all the parts over to the 77 Super Le Tour. This bike is the opposite of the Motobecane, short top tube means drops are super comfortable but I feel cramped with the porteurs. Plus I like the bag on the front, and the porteur bars make that pretty much impossible to install with any kind of elegance.

Very nice! I am thinking about possibly moving the Nitto Moustache bars from my geared Carlton Criterium over to the Jubile' and your photo helps me to visualize what it might look like. I also love the chrome Schwinn. I've only had one fully chromed bike and it was a Bianchi track bike. Sadly it was too tall for me. Normally I don't care about standover, but being a fixed gear it does matter a bit more. At least to me it does. It was measured by Bianchi as 59cm but rode much more like a 61cm to me. Nice bike otherwise.

Thanks. It's got to be something nice, as it has wide dent in the TT where it looks like someone broke a ulock with a jack. The damage was done before the powdercoat (and I'm guessing the canti bosses) I suspect 531 by the ride characteristics. Not a Raleigh or Holdsworth. Dropouts are Campy, BB english, 27.2 post. It really works great as a tracklocross since it only has 55mm of bb drop.

I'm definitely more of a drop bar guy but I do really like the porteurs. Definitely turns the bike in to more of a casual rider, biggest thing I need to figure out is some kind of foot retention for non-clipless shoes. My heart is telling me to go with toe clips because it would be more appropriate to the look but I know I'd probably like foot straps more.

The Schwinn is one of those bikes that I don't think I can ever get rid of. I think a fixed gear build is a great use for it since it has a limited number of braze-ons, it's such a clean bike stripped down. Plus I don't have to worry about corrosion underneath clamp on shifters or cable guides. If I move somewhere that lets me have more room for bikes I may build it back up as a geared bike with the original hubs and a Shimano Arabesque groupset to use as a fair weather rider but for now I'm happy.

Only issue with it as a fixed gear is that the chrome dropouts are a bit slippery so I have had to readjust chain tension after only a few rides, but not a huge deal.

You think the canti bosses are a later addition? With that little BB drop you could have a vintage CX bike on your hands...which makes me incredibly jealous since those are rare as hens teeth (especially in my size)
