Amazing bikes-

That fillet brazed bottom bracket area is so cool to me.

I'm amazed that someone sold their Ritchey to Play It Again Sports...

Thank you all for posting them!

Tom Ritchey got started in the mountain bike game in 1979, when he "advanced" nine new frames to Gary Fisher. Gary in turn enlisted me in the effort, and we became "MountainBikes," operating out of a rented garage.

This is one of the nine bikes. It was sold to a firefighter who kept it in immaculate condition. Two years ago it was stolen.

Because I pay attention to Internet discussions of Ritchey bikes, I picked up on a post where a guy saw a Ritchey on EBay and because it had no SN#, he wondered whether it was authentic. It was my friend's bike, I alerted him, and he and the police arrived just ahead of the FedX truck that would have picked it up to ship to Belgium.

Charlie,

Thanks so much for the story and the photos. It is soooo very nice when the thieves get beaten. And that bike IS a true beauty!

My 1981 was stolen from my Bangkok flat, and I'm still pissed about it. I ordered it from you in the spring-summer of 1981. You shipped it to me in Thailand. That bike remains my all-time favorite, although I do love the sports touring road bike for different reasons. The '84 is an attempt to replace the missing '81, but it doesn't quite do it. I'd bonded too tightly with the '81. sigh.

Cheers,

Owen

and here is the 85 Ascent I am building up, I'd like to get a different crank for it but that can wait:

My 1994 P-21 has an aftermarket mod. There is a little cable tension adjuster on the back of the rear derailleur. It's about a third of an inch from end to end. On this bike it has been replaced with a three-faceted bronze casting with features so tiny that it takes the macro lens to properly appreciate them.

The problem with Ritcheys (and Looks) is that the name is too generic...how do you even find one (other than getting lucky on CL, or a swap)? You can't really do keyword searches for Ritcheys.

IMHO he may be the most interesting and important builder of the USA...if anything he's under appreciated.

In 1983 I had Tom Ritchey build a custom version of the Annapurna for me. I had him add the eyelets for touring gear, which were not standard on his bikes.

The original paint is a little battered.

Here's Tom with the bike.

In 1984 I toured in Canada's Northwest Territories on this bike

What I think most remarkable is how very, very little Tom has aged. It is rather frightening, eh?

Fabulous Annapurna. It wasn't clear, but I'm gonna assume you still have it. Yes?

Ex wife, widow, inheritor, who knows? At first glance it's a thoroughly obsolete thrashed MTB. The shop didn't know anything either, they had it for $75.

I'd passed on it and I also told my boss about it. He likes old bikes and he kept circling back to my cube saying man, I don't need another project, I have my keeper MTB, those brakes are strange, I'm not going to get it... Over and over! In the end he put it off long enough to miss it.
