Garage Finds: Peter Mooney, Woodrup Cycles, Puch & Nishiki
A lot to digest here and perhaps better done as numerous posts. But it all went down on the same day so….
I never pass up the opportunity to looks for bikes when visiting my mother and it is usually fruitful. Yesterday I bought 4 bikes (second only to the time I bought 9 but that is another story that includes an XO1).
I bought the Nishiki early in the day thinking any Tange Prestige frame for well under $100 was worth it and a few nice components as well. The other 3 bikes I had been reaching out to the seller for a few days and had not heard back. I had thought they had either sold or the seller might re list for more $, but then I heard from them and ran over. I pretty much knew going in I was going to buy the Mooney and Woodrup and thought if they would accept an offer for all three I would do them a favor and make it easy for them, all sold at once. The deal went down and I loaded up the car.
The Mooney and the Woodrup appear to be in exceptional shape other than 20 years of dust from hanging in a garage. Full Campy through on the Mooney, and a nice mix on the Woodrup.
if any one can help identify the sealed bearing hubs on the Puch it would be appreciated. I have also done a preliminary search for serial number on the Mooney, but no luck. The Woodrup looks to be re painted, perhaps by Woodrup and I believe is 531 throughout. The Mooney has no tubing labels and I read somewhere they often were built with mixed sets. The Puch is 531 throughout.
And they fit!
whew!

Nice! Peter Mooney is still around at Belmont Wheelworks, so you might try reaching out (though I heard he plans to retire soon).

Cripes! I would have been psyched for days to have found any of those. But especially the Mooney or Woodrup. I'm not a huge fan of Sante, but that Nishiki is a sweet frame. I bet it rides great.
Not sure about the hubs on the Puch - maybe American Classic? Someone will know for sure.

have you been able to determine a model name for the Puch?
---
one possible source for the OFMEGA Sintesi pedal dustcap might be Palo Alto Bicycle (PAB)

Well, that's the score of the year so far...
...and hell's yeah, that front rack is the bomb! What a cool home-made contraption
Those should all clean up nicely. Congrats, OP!

yep. especially on the early versions with plated steel center-section barrels (which I think these are) You can check with a magnet.
Phil logos BITD, and for quite a while longer, were just screen- or pad-printed on the metal. Often with weathering they just flaked off.
Really a glorious haul...so is your mother the lucky charm that helps you find such deals?

Phil hubs markings were just silk screened on name "Phil" in script, so they usually get rubbed off from doing wheel/hub cleaning.

Re: the Mooney - I'm guessing pre 1979 as the derailleur cable run over the BB plus horizontal dropouts. My 1979 (Delivered in May) cables run under the BB. Yes, it has horizontal dropouts but that is because I requested them.
When I ordered mine fall of '78, Peter would not promise all 531 or sticker it unless you paid an additional $25 or $59 dollars (it's been a long time). Peter felt strongly that dictating a tubeset limited his judgement on the best tubes for that rider and application. (So thinking best bike, not best resale value?) Mine's not stickered. I didn't ask what the tubes are. It is MUCH stiffer than my 531 Raleigh Competition. (Like night and day, despite having just as long chainstays.)

When I sold them, they looked like this:
Hard to tell the difference from 2' feet away. Rub-on transfers, and they looked as though they'd hold up well for a long time. Of course, one could always order numerous pairs and be set for life - or at least the lifetime of the hubs, which is pretty much the same thing

Puch -
if curious, it might be of interest to see if there is/was a parallel A-D model
recall the A-D line as launching 1977-78...may be off slightly
Puch looks as though it may be slightly earlier than this so possible there may no be a close parallel

But liquid inks used were said to be lacquers and adhesives could be a sticky wax (default) or something more aggressive if you spec'd that.
My coworkers did our own informal "weather test" by applying rubdowns to a Honda Civic the owner promised to never wash.
We were surprised with how well and long they held up to wind, rain and direct sunshine but NOT to abrasion.
