I went for a ride at lunch. It was nice. I would have otherwise spent that time sitting at my desk pretending to read a memo.

I love lunch rides. They make the day go faster. It's getting cooler here (not 100 degrees in the middle of the day) so I'll start taking my mtn bike to work and get out on the trail for 45 minutes.

As TKP's only Strava follower, I feel I have the right to tell him where and how to ride.

Went out to do intervals and there was a paceline of 9 on the crit course, whittled down to 4 when they called 2 laps we all took off. Two guys jumped hard with a lap to go but we caught them, kept up the pace and they fell off, it was just the two of us, and I let the other guy jump and stayed on his wheel and hit the line about 2 feet in front of him. All those guys were 3's and the pace was about 100 watts over a 4's race. Even though its fake racing its still a big motivator.

Zwift will officially be $10/month, and they announced a "workout mode" where it shows you intervals and wattage targets.

If the workout mode is flexible and good, I would consider this. If it's limited to canned workouts, probably not.

If I could program my own workouts, and they were 'private' it might be something. Would be cool to design hills that would suit my training needs. Of course I'm certain everything I just posted was in the realm of my imagination.

How do you guys manage racing cross with building up for next season on the road? Cross racing here lasts from october until let's say end of january and the first real races on the road are at the end of march for me. Right now i am building up base with endurance rides on the road and doing cross twice a week (so far it's been training only, but will probably be 1 race, 1 training ride a week from now on) for intensity, but i feel i will be lacking in the FTP / sweetspot workouts?

I don't race cross, but my understanding of the sciencey stuff behind how to do both is that you can use cross races and workouts to build vo2 which can be utilized to boost ftp, and a higher FTP allows for a higher workload during base which can lead to improved performance in the next season. This of course relies on not being burned out and getting enough rest, I imagine in practice it's harder to pull off than theory suggests.

i do one cross workout during the week (tuesday), then try to get more steady work in on wednesday and thursday (only if i'm not racing). thursday is easy, friday is openers. race saturday. try to double up if i can. don't race sundays so i can do a long ride. that being said, i probably am doing too much volume to really "excel" at cross, which requires you be pretty rested. i race cross for fun though.

The cyclocross season in the U.S. has historically ended earlier than it does in Western Europe, for a combination of reasons, but climate is a major factor. The weather here is just so much colder in January and February. I suppose they could (and maybe do) race deeper into the winter on the West coast. Most of the people I know who focus on cross will tend to start their road season a little bit later, or with the understanding that they will still have a lot of building to do. People who aren't as focused on cross can still incorporate it into their off-season, perhaps by doing fewer races to allow more training. Personally, my plan for the fall is to taper off my season a little early and mostly finish up racing in mid-November rather than racing hard into mid-December. That will let me turn my attention to building base early enough to be ready for racing road by March or April.

You keep saying these things as though they are somehow at odds. I race cross for fun, too. Excelling IS fun, I can tell you. Maybe it is more accurate to say that you are prioritizing other goals over getting the best possible CX results.

What does it mean to excel?

Is to excel to have fun, or get to results?

If a tree excelled in the woods, and no one was there to see it, does it really count?

Bro, do you even excel?
