Best rim brake pads (shoes?) for Ultegra?

Best rim brake pads (shoes?) for Ultegra?
I've always bought Shimano brake shoes (that means they come w/ the metal backing?). I've had no problems (except when I misaligned them).
- But are there better alternatives? Like Kool Stop? Or?
- Do you ever treat the mating surface of rim brake pads? I'm thinking about old pads (10 years) or glazed pads (although I only experienced that w/ pre-SIS brakes).

Kool Stop Salmons for me. Works in wet or dry. I've tried a few brands including several versions of SwissStop and Shimano and Kool Stops are the best. I'll add that Shimano's pads seem to be getting better all the time and I haven't tried any since the last 10sp Dura Ace brakes came out so maybe someone else can comment on them.
Pad surfaces that are glazed, oiled or old can sometimes be brought back to life by lightly sanding down the surface to virgin material. If pads are old and hard there's not much you can do for them.

Unless you have a carbon braking surface, it's Kool Stop Salmons. I can't really see a need to buy anything else. They just work.

I like the SwissStop BXP compound but it wears pretty fast, and seems to be hard on the rims as well. I used to use them on my group ride bike since they did stop faster, but since I don't do group rides anymore I've gone back to Kool Stop Salmon. Pretty much everything I own has Kool Stop Salmon or Dual Compound pads on them.

After using Cool Stops Salmon for years I tried Swiss Stops blue pads for aluminum rims and I think they are superior to Cool Stops, have better modulation. Wear seem OK also, although had them only for 1 year on one of my bikes. The latest Dura Ace Shimano is also great on my other bike, maybe even better that Swiss Stops, although the bikes and brakes are different (Dura Ace vs Terktro long reach).

The official Shimano pads are honestly pretty good. I also run kool stop salmon on most things.
This has gotten a lot better, it seems. I threw some extremely cheap Jag basics V brake pads on my single speed cross bike the other day because it's what I had fast access to, and frankly they work great. Sure, they'll get Kool Stop pads when I wear them out.
