DIY Wheel Building Jig (pics)
Thought I'd have a crack at building something P&K Lie quality at a Park Tool price point. As long as I didn't up spending P&K Lie money on something Park Tool quality I considered it a success. As it turns out, I couldn't be happier with the jig. If I had another chance, I'd make a few cosmetic changes, but functionally can't think of any improvements at this stage.
Requirements were:
Requirements were:
- Absolutely rock solid stability with zero flex
- Flexibility to accommodate anything from a BMX wheel up to a fat bike wheel
- Simplicity and ease of use
- Components parts off the shelf, with minimal machining (the only parts requiring machining ended up being the brass brackets to hold the hub)
- Steel base so I could use DTI gauges on magnetic bases
- That was it I think

The "adjustable bit"... The plates provide the vertical movement. The rods provide the horizontal movement. Very quick and easy to adjust if you are starting a different sized rim.

Levelling up and a fully adjustable ruler and gauges to measure dish whilst in the jig. Just requires a simple measurement and plumb bob to determine the centre point. The original intent was just to get a rough idea of dish, but still remove the wheel to get ultra accurate measurements with a dishing tool. As it turns out the ruler and gauges are just as good as the dishing tool.

That's one of the most over-the-top devices I think I've ever seen.
I'm immensely impressed with your jig, your skill, and your attention to detail.
Thank you for sharing.
