I let it sit a while or even till the next day then wipe the residue off usually with some paper towels. I go anywhere from 100-200 miles depending on how lazy I am. My chains usually last about 3000 miles and I have never had one squeak or maybe I am just too old and deaf to hear it.
Ditto, Boeshield T-9. I use it to touch up my waxed chains if I'm lagging behind on redipping in the crock pot of wax. It produces black grime like any wet lube but cleans up better than most. An old napkin dampened with rubbing alcohol will clean off most of the external grime.

Boeshield also works to restore some smoothness to old cables/housings if we don't have time or money to completely replace with new cables and housings. I've postponed replacing those for a few months by using T-9 to slick up the oxidized cables. It wicks quickly down the cable. Less messy and smelly than WD-40.

'89 STB. Tricolor 7 speed gripshift.

Over cast lighting. The second generation 8 speed tri color shifts so smoothly matched with the 7 speed gripshift. To the point you're not sure it shifted. Aero seatpost, aero bars and tricolor crankset, brakeset, and derailleurs.

This is how I ride it. It's 52cm instead of my regular 54cm. Although it's about as dialed in as I could want, I'm still gonna make it 9 speed dura ace...eventually. It's my Friday rider.

For lubes/grease, I use auto parts store house brands. Silicone spray inside the frame instead of Frame Saver. High temp bearing grease for the headset and BB. For cleaning parts, I mix brake cleaner, a penetrant, dish soap and something like Simply Green. I dip the part in and go at it with a toothbrush. One of these days I will buy an ultrasonic cleaner. For rust spots on paint, I use vinegar, and a rinse. Then I apply rust stopping primer with a Q-tip. After that, I apply a clear protector like fingernail polish with another Q-tip.

One thing I don't use anymore is ordinary electrical tape to tape cables to the handlebars or finish off bar wrap. It could be the humidity here, but the adhesive on the back will get liquidy/gooey and make a mess.

My riding buddy and I went on a 18 mile ride today. He uses a Garmin and asked him to calculate mileage because we were going on a different route. When we finally got to the last half mile then turnaround he started using some choice words directed to me because we were on our hilly course. I told him it was for his own good, hehe.
I was riding the trek and he in his Ironman. The 56cm trek rode well and felt much like my Ironman. So no real complaints about it...well other than it'd not an Ironman. I thought the lighter weight would help on the hills but the first hill is steep but short probably a 1/4 mile. I don't know the grade but itll get you to 40mph on the down side before you get to the bottom, if that tells you anything. I stayed within a bike length as we headed up but I paid the price as I thought my heart was gonna explode. I was in the next easiest gear. I actually never used the easiest gear the 42x28. I recovered well enough as I lead the last 1/2 mile hill before direct turnaround. Actually at that point, we traded bikes. I adjusted the height of his saddle, easy enough as I had measured before we headed out and the trek has a quick release seat bolt. Unfortunately I didn't change saddle height for his bike I was riding. Weirdly were the same height but his saddle is set way lower than mine but it doesn't look like his legs are shorter than mine. I finally said man I wish I had brought an allen wrench, he said there's one in the saddle bag. As soon as I pulled them out I recognized they were what I use, he said you gave those to me. It was a 4,5,6. I put the same things in all my saddle bags. 3 Allen wrenches, a new spare tube, tire levers, 35mm canister of quarters, and 4 benadryl pills. Then I wrap a toestrap around-the outside of the seatbag. So we pulled over and I adjusted and we were on our way.
I can tell you but you probably already know, the trek 5900 handled so very similar to the Ironman however it's lighter. It is quick handling like the '88s and '89s too.
Afterwards I said dude the tires on your ironman are hard! He said I was gonna say the same thing about the trek.
Afterwards I went on a lone ride aboard my exceptionally smooth riding and shifting '89 Ironman. Later Irongents.

I have my phone holder wrapped around the stem. And then the usual elbow rest, inner tube bar wrap, and gripshift.
The hoods are switched/reversed, the left hood is on the right and vice versa. I got em like that on my '88 master, however I've left them for fear if I changed them back I would tear them.

Funny you mentioned the smell. This is the current bearing grease until it is empty. As I am going down the road, I get a whiff of it coming from somewhere.

I was originally going to write, "coming from the headset or BB." Then I realized I used it on all the bearings on the bike.

New (to me) 87 Master

The closest I've owned to a time capsule bike. Paint is near flawless. I have only noticed one part that is not original. Can you spot it?

Rear tire and bar tape. If you'll be I. Cambria next week, I can bring you a tire to match your front.

I was thinking tire- didn't know about the tape.

Next week I will be working like a dog. Thanks anyway. Hope you all have a good time.

edit: I just rememberd I have a NIB set of yellow Turbo Pros in 23mm. They wouldn't look good on any of my other bikes.
