how cold is it?

I love the comment about thinner ice this year. I heard the same to be true here in the northeast.
I did see one weekend of pond hockey after a particularly cold "cold-snap." But one weekend is about it.
I think I heard that the Charles River between Cambridge and Boston is particularly thin this year.
Let's be honest - if the lake ice is too thin, you'll likely be doing some swimming, not cycling.

Windy, then warm, then cold means I was able to ride on top of snowdrifts today. In several spots I could have ridden into people's back yards. They usually don't set up like this until late March.

It got up to 85°F here on my ride today. I wish I could be smug about this, but the implications are frightening.

From the days when I lived where it actually gets cold:
It's so cold the only car that will start is the old Plymouth with no compression.
It's so cold, somebody is going to walk to their mailbox and not make it back alive.
It's so cold, a drive to the local grocery feels like an expedition.
Today living in Portland, OR:
It's so cold... lol, it doesn't get cold here.

We've had two fires in Big Sur this February, and one in Marin.

Mid to late March the Sun intensity alone can melt ice on the street when its around -10C. Which creates the interesting situation where road spray instantly freezes to the bike in an accumulating fashion.

The snow can disappear surprisingly fast in the spring. Warm sunny days with above freezing nights most can be gone in a week. The drifts take a bit longer to go.

About now, the interesting (and depressing) question is not how cold is it?, but rather, when will the cold end?

We'll have to see what I'm up for this afternoon. Fortunately, wind in the Cities isn't nearly as bad as out in the country, with all the trees and structures around here. The gusts would be too dangerous out on an open county road, getting blown into traffic or into the ditch. I might get out a few miles to see how it goes, given the mild temp.

Oh, blow off the Sat low. The daytime high looks pretty good from my perspective. I used to really be up on morning lows with my commuting pre-covid, but now with this work from home stuff, I rarely pay attention to them unless the furnace has been running all night and I want to confirm it's just weather-related and not the furnace.

if I've just finished week 1 from my fall & if it takes 4 weeks to heal well enough to go sporting again, that' s somewhere March 13-19? in my area, there's a chance I can get in one more snow storm ride, maybe even at nite ... ;-)

A week later when swelling had gone down enough, I finally figured out it hadn't been dislocated. My first bone break, requiring a titanium screw (a $300 part, according to the technician when I asked) to set it. I was off the bike for five weeks with that, about this same time frame! (Also had two sprained wrists and a mildly sprained shoulder that needed to heal, plus a cracked helmet.)

it's so cold, that when driving to visit Sis on "The Cape" this weekend, the marine weather channel warned of freezing spray. which can be a hazard to fishermen
