So far, I've been fine with riding my commuter road bike from the 80s in both Canadian summer and winter. I guess it depends on how much you want to maintain your bike when riding it in the winter.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. I did end up getting a winter bike together last month: the only thing I needed to buy immediately was the fenders.
