I re-visited The Miracle Worker film with Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, which reminded me of this photograph of the real Helen Keller riding a tandem. Please note that despite riding in the front, she is not the captain. Note the rod extending back from the fork crown, which is a linkage to allow the man in the back to steer. This was not a customization to accommodate Keller's blindness. It was quite common on many 1890s tandems. Primarily utilized by couples, tandems presented the social issue of whether a woman should ride up front or on the back. Theoretically, a tandem is more efficient with the stronger rider in the back. However, for a pairing of the opposite sex, that means that the woman would in the front and responsible for the steering, which put her in a position of control over the man. Some tandems solved the dilemma by providing a linkage from the front fork to a 2nd steering column for the rear cyclist, thus allowing the man to maintain control. As women gained social stature, this approach died away, due to the added complexity, associated cost and extra weight. I'm also including a circa 1894 poster of a Rouxel and Dubois tandem, as it better shows a typical rear steering linakge, which is mostly obscured by Keller's skirt.

This is a grueling canoe race, 350 miles nearly non stop by some teams and individuals. The record is I think 35 hours and change, essentially ten miles an hour average. I did it with my son in 62 hours, with about 2.5 hours of sleep. It takes about a week before you recover after the race.

Not so much a celebrity on a bike as a celebrity with a bike as prop. This is from the December issue of Vogue, featuring Harry Stiles's controversial photo shoot. Looks like an interesting Raleigh with Tourist stem/bar combo with only the front brake lever and no rods, on what appears to be a chromed Sports frame; with thimble fork and without the bolted-on seatstays of the Tourist. Nice shiny disc covers on the wheels.
Strange choice of bike to chrome and build up like this, but it makes for a superb looking prop. A bit of extra work on it could make it a completely ridable piece of art.
