I'm in the same boat. Drunk in the Philippines, woke up with a tat. Not a bad one. But I wish that I knew then that I would rather not have it later in life.

Using Hooters as an example of a company that has appearance "standards" in order to present a certain image is pretty sad.

I'd have a seriously hard time saying Hooters has "standards".
On The flip side, Hooters is a very viable example here. Seeing how Hooters along with all their other rules for appearance, has a strict no visible tattoo policy.
I am not justifying Hooters by the way. it just is what it is.

I don’t have any ink or plans for any. I’ve never considered getting a tat though never had issue with some. The obviously bad or just stupid ones are funny.
I think of the Barcelonian climbers (men) that all had tramp stamps. I still laugh about them.
But never say never. I met an older guy, mid 70s probably with a rather fresh bicycle tat on his leg. I didn’t have a chance to really ask him about it but was later told that it was in memory of a son he lost.
Some may call it cliche but it does seem like a poignant way to remind yourself of a loss.

I have 2 tattoos. Both of them I got in my late-30s. One is a memorial to people who were important in my life. The other is a reminder of a place and experience that was significantly meaningful to me. I choose to display these on my body because I appreciate tattoo art.
You wondered why. Those are my reasons. I don't need to you to agree, nor am I trying to convince you of anything. Honestly, I couldn't care less if you agree or not. I didn't get my tattoos for anyone but me.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to Tattoo their body. It just kills me when I see an otherwise beautiful young woman, who has everything in the world going for her, have some abomination written or drawn across her body.
I realize that many members and their loved ones may have tattoos and I'm sure I'm not going to change (or trying to change) anyone's mind. But I just don't agree with any of the arguments or reasons for getting a tattoo. But don't worry, other than expressing this distaste for this fad in general I don't and wouldn't every criticize anyone in public or private regarding their choice, It's just that I really don't get it.

There has been no need for a lot of what has been posted in this thread. Eric made a very good point- just let it stand instead of being critical of the very good point.

I don't have any. The only one I'd consider would be a likeness of Herve Villechaize. That would be getting into fantasy territory, though.

I have twice as many tat's as my youngest daughter and got them at the ripe old age of 58. Both daughters are very close and they had each others initials in Morse code put on their arms. They were getting some judgmental feelings from the grandparents, so as a sign of support I added both my arms to the mix. It works out kind of neat with the left-handed daughter on my left arm and right-handed daughter on the right. Oldest daughter is in the music industry and has many more....

There's also no need for the judgement and criticism being dished out by people who have no interest ever getting a tattoo themselves. The OP was looking for some input on a decision he is already planning to make. He was not asking for opinions on whether or not he should make the decision. The hypocrisy of TMT's post is vivid.
