Of course. It's the weird rides, either good or bad, that become the ones that stick in our memories and get replayed and savored. The warm, blue sky rides are nice but anyone can do those and they kind of all blend together in our head.

Moved our kid into his summer intern place in Dallas yesterday. Mom and son made a Target run while I took a nap. Got in trouble for letting his pup sleep with me in the bad. Felt sorry for the little girl as she was nervous in a strange place.

For the next three months, he gets to live in an apartment with a chair that we moved from his apartment at school, a TV on some shelves, two camp chairs, personal effects, minimal kitchen gear, the dog's crate and toys, and a twin mattress on the floor. It's not worth moving everything here for such a short time.

He can also come to our place whenever he wants since we are just 40 minutes away.

Dog is an English Cream Golden Retriever. Now 5 months old, and will likely about double in size. She is a really nice dog.

So the Alpha Romeo "Graduate" was obviously just a symbol (or was it an allegory??), but back to cars mrs datlas has ALWAYS coveted a Mazda miata. My thinking is if/when the Saturn dies, I can get her FIT and she can get a Miata.

That said, I wonder how practical a Miata is for her since she is a very cautious driver and I suspect this car caters to a performance-minded driver.

Thoughts? She does have a birthday in August, so wheels in my head are spinning......

That's not a whole lot more than I had during my three years of law school in '88-'91. I did have a dresser and a crappy desk and lounge chair, but those came with the apartment. I did not have a TV but did have a receiver, turntable, tape deck and a pair of speakers.. The mattress and box spring (on the floor) were doubles. Mom had ordered what she though was a metal frame, but they were only the rails that need a headboard and footboard to be of use.

Rent was $230/month. Gas radiator heat and water included.

Off to take the Surly to the shop for new brake pads and new cables all around. The latter have not been changed in several years.

The Miata caters to the person who wants a convertible sports car that is reminiscent of the British and Italian sports cars of the '60s and '70s - wind in your hair, sporty handling, fun to drive. They are not particularly fast, and do not really appeal to the person looking for a fast performance car (e.g. Porsche Boxster or more types). But, they are quick, fast enough, and very engaging to drive. In fact, in my mind, a well-handling car that has modest horsepower can be much more fun to drive than a very powerful car because you don't have to worry so much about it getting out of hand or getting in trouble with the law.

I'd get her the Miata in a heart beat if she really wants it. It comes with a stick or automatic, but I'd recommend the stick if she can drive it or learn to drive it. It's not a "practical" car in terms of carrying capacity, but no two-seat car is. There is room for groceries in the trunk and you can always put more on the passenger floor and seat (I have personal experience with that). Being a cautious driver will not prevent her from having fun with it.

They are also reasonable to maintain and reliable.

I'd imagine it would put a big smile on her face, and that's what you are really after, isn't it?

I wouldn't wait for the Saturn to die either. It's served its duty.

We grabbed the twin from one of the kids' rooms at the house. No box spring! The TV is an old one that was sitting on the floor of our guest room for some reason, and my wife wanted it gone. Rent for this place is $2,000/month which was the cheapest we could find for a safe place with no more than a 3-month lease. He also has to pay for his other apartment at $1,200/month. We told him he would just have to suck it up as part of the cost of his degree. Fortunately, the internship pays well.

One more thing, Datlas, the 2019 model is the best to get if you go used.

A Miata can be a fine daily driver. It's not a supercar that needs to be flogged to keep it from getting carboned up. If you want a 2 seater sports car it's more practical than an old British or Italian thing, for sure. There are Miata clubs around which can be helpful. Their parts prices are not cheap, however, but what is these days?
