I bought the Marin BNIB back in '95 and rode it tons with a pair of 26x1.25 fatboy slicks. My aluminum bikes were faster but never felt as nice.
My son rides it now with a pair of knobbies and can't believe a bike older than him rides better than his modern aluminum hybrids (of similar value).
I missed the smooth ride of steel but didn't have the heart to take the Marin back so I picked up a lightly used steel Globe Roll2 and all is good again .....

Maybe one reason is that in another 20 years with a new set of tires, that "old" steel bike will ride just fine.
There are still some of Wright Bros steel frame bikes with new tires that can be ridden today. When some of the fantastic plastic bike that are being built today are 100 years old, I wonder if they could still be used. My guess is they would just shatter, since plastic ages quickly.

Meh .... took Ye Olde Raleigh out for a spin this evening. Turns out, it is just a bicycle.
Good thing I like bicycles.
