Indoor Spinning

Can you get away without padded shorts on a 45 minute indoor studio cycle ride?

Welcome to the forum. Padded shorts aren't required, but after many days you might find out why cyclists use them. In addition, hygiene is very important

For short, 30-minute active recovery workouts sometimes I'm lazy to go put on the full kit and just ride with whatever I happen to be wearing at the time.

No, you don’t have to, but I get pretty sweaty on those spin bikes, and regular gym shorts tend to bunch, hold moisture, and have seams in the wrong places Recipe for chafing.

I think in some ways, padded shorts are MORE necessary on the trainer than the road. On the road, you stop, stand up, sprint, climb out of the saddle, etc. You change positions frequently. On the trainer, I'm finding I stay seated for long stretches. When doing intervals I now sometimes ride out of the saddle for 30 or so seconds during the 'recovery' segments.

Regarding hygiene, yeah - my bibs are always completely soaked in sweat after a session on the trainer. So I have at least 5 pairs of them and never wear a pair twice before laundering. them.

You can get some affordable cycling shorts with pads on AliExpress. They have bibs and shorts for cheap but you will need to wait a couple of weeks for delivery. I bought 4 pairs for trainer duty and they work just fine. Be sure to order one size larger than your usual fit.

Cycling shorts have flat seams to pre chaffing.
That where the pain comes from on your legs.
Padding we’ll help your rear end adjust to a the saddle.
