Should I replace the Shimano Altus with a 105?
I have an old small cage RD 105 RD1055 , 7 speed I think. Can and should I replace the Acera on my 7 speed cassette? The FD is a 105.The shifter is a combo brake shifter. Should I go with a friction shifter and separate brake lever?

A simple answer is maybe.
Your shifter will work with the RD-1055 and the 105 is a better rear derailleur.
It all comes down to max cog and capacity.
The 105 max cog is 28t with a chain wrap of 28t.
If that fits then, sure.

Why? I'd take a new Acera over a worn out 105.
Acera is more than adequate for 7 speed. It's above Tourney & Altus.
An Altus shifts the 9 speed on my hybrid adequately.

On the other hand I can service the bearings on the front wheel. It could be easier than working on a derailleur.
