Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When watching power uphill, what level do you try to stay under?

Ive gotten so much stronger since the last time you were here. I would maintain about 24 going down the hill, and then going back up the hill I would maintain that speed all the way up. I got tired of having to slam my brakes as soon as the elevation started to change in an upwards direction. The group would instantly slow down. When I did maintain my speed, pulling up the hill I just dropped them.

But even in the flat areas the speed kept changing. Varied from 15-23. Just different from what I am used to. At one point I was told to pull and the stronger of the riders told me to punch it. I dialed it up and was pulling for a couple of miles at 26 mph. They did pretty good, only started to lose them in the last half mile or so.

Depends. Solo or with a group? Is this a hill where we'll regroup at the top or are we rolling along?

If it's a regroup situation, I have a good idea of my 1min, 3min and 5min power, so those will be the loose upper bounds, depending upon the duration of the hill, if I'm solo or if I'm with people that may want to suffer along. If it's a longer hill (most in my area aren't) or if the pace is more relaxed and/or we want to stay together, I'll sit anywhere between 80 and 100% of FTP, depending upon the disposition and/or capacity of the others.

You've gotta read the room. If you're pretty sure that they'll be hustling up the hill with you, sure. If not, maintaining a steady-ish speed up- and down-hill means a huge yo-yoing of effort, which may be frowned upon cause people to yell at you.

So, I should slow to 8 mph going up a slight incline? That doesn’t seem right either. I wasn’t increasing the speed going up the hill, just maintaining.

I don’t have these issues in VA.

Then don't ride with that group. If you want to ride with the group, ride with the group.

Fair enough, I guess I just don’t understand the pace. Maybe I am making it more complicated than it was.

Depends on the hill and length of ride. 1 minute or less on the climb it’s balls to the wall if it’s a short ride or at FTP if it’s longer. 20 minute climbs I try to stay at 90%FTP. Anything longer than that and it’s like 70-80% of it.

Do NOT go into the red zone until you are cresting the hill, or nearly so. IOW keep it under FTP for a long climb.

I rode with a group last Tuesday that got all strung out on the hills, there was some questionable bike handling going on as well which ultimately ended in a guy eating it going somewhere in the 35 mph area.

Maybe it was a one off, but this is why I like solo most of the time

I was totally redlined today on a short climb right in the middle of the hill and started losing power quickly. I PR’d, but wonder how it would have gone if I kept it near my average power for the climb for the first 45 seconds and then hammered the end. Maybe next time.

I don't use any electronics, not even a speedometer since 2001. I've never been a fast climber but I have done a lot of climbing, at least 300,000 feet per year and sometimes more. I can ride by perceived effort well enough to get over whatever I'm climbing. Years ago I tried to figure out how to recover on a climb after I had blown myself up.

I'm never going to beat any good climbers up a hill but I learned how to stay within myself. It's harder now than it was years ago, for sure.

I ran into this problem with the C&V rides. Since the group is based on riding old bikes, rather than fitness or speed level, the abilities of the group are diverse. So usually we get huge splits at every incline - in both directions, it turns out, because not everyone likes to go ripping down the straight descents like I do. I'll get to the bottom and everyone's at least 50 yards behind.

In other news, the lawns are toast.

Another week like this and we'll be looking to steal water from NW Metro ATL.
