Does it look tacky to wear a mtb shoe while riding a rode bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Doesn't look tacky...most mtb shoes look pretty similar. I've got 'roadie' shoes, but there are times when I wish I had recessed cleats... they are a pain in the a$$ sometimes to walk in...especially at the bigger organized rides.

i don't think it is. i've been riding my road bike for about three years now, and i've only had mtn. bike shoes. the main reason for this is that i race bmx and i use mtn. bike shoes for that, so instead of spending loads of dough on a new set of shoes, i got another set of time atac pedals for dirt cheap from a friend and just used the same shoes. i might get road shoes this summer because the atacs are getting a little bit stretched. but all in all, if you are just riding for recreation and need to save some cash, go for mtn. shoes

Very true Jakey, I really like the it that I can walk on my mtb shoes and not punish the cleats at the same time.

Thats what I am doing now, I use my mtb shoes on both my mtb and road bike, it works very nice, maybe I will just continue wearing my mtb and save some cash.

If you plan on walking at all in the shoes, get mtb shoes. And no, they don't look tacky. Watching someone in spandex try to walking on their heels in road shoes, now that's tacky.

Get Pearl Isumi vagabonds. The mountain shoe is exactly like the road shoe except it has knobs so you can walk.

I will keep that in mind but already have a pair of Answer mtn shoes, real comfy and used to them

I think mtn bike shoes look just fine. I wear them all the time!

My favorites are the Lake shoes.

Lake CX120... the most walkable road shoe I've ever used. Actually I used the CX125 but they no longer make those. They were essentially the same as the CX120. These shoes accept all popular brands of cleats... even road cleats.

I was riding with these for a while:

Pearl Izumi Vagabond II, they're the same as the road version of that shoe, but with treads. I paid $55 last June at Supergo. I think they have Vagabond III now, but I'm sure you can find the Vagabond II cheap, if you're interested.

Edit: I see people have already suggested this shoe....it's that good!

I think I'm very stylish when I wear my Sidi Dominator 5s, plus I can walk with impunity.

+1 on the Vagabond II mountain shoes for the road. Great shoes, stiff as you'll find at that price point, and they really are identical to the road shoes - except that you don't have to slip and slide across the hardwood/lobby before getting onto the bike.

The great thing about road bike shoes is that they allow you to waddle around like a duck with a learning disability and then fall on your a** just when you're trying to impress some girl.

I just switched to road shoes yesterday. I have CB Quattro pedals, the cleats come with a plastic base, not as easy to walk in as the mtn. Vagabonds, but they're not bad...if you ever consider switching to road shoes/pedals.

My Rockhoppers have pretty much worn out and I'm in the market for a new pair of shoes and guess what? They are going to be Mtb shoes too!

There's lots of good stiff Mtb shoes on the market now that don't compromise road performance (unless you're a racer) and you can walk around in a bit.

No but it's even cooler to ride to the local 7-11 (or short jaunt) on your Highend road bike in your pedestrian clothes and Teva sandals....

Just something very cool about that, like tooling around the streets in a F1 racer all casual like in shorts and a Polo

Do you think they would work with Speedplays?

I balance the MTB look - keep the legs hairy and wear hel-mutts with visors... the kharma is in the balance

Nothing tacky at all about it. I got my mtb shoes when I went clipless and I love them. I do like the fact that I can walk around in them. I got a pair of Sidi Rampa IIs on closeout for $40 (I believe they are now the Sidi Blaze) and they are comfortable enough to wear all day. This comes in very handy when I am commuting.

Cheers,

Brian

BTW: I only ride a road bike so please don't light into me for the question.

It depends. If you actually ride the MTB offroad then you will most likely find the off-bike experience of which you can expect there to be many to also be... unpleasant.

How about X series road cleats? Will the treads protect these Speedplay cleats?

edit: I didn't realize these were road shoes. They look like Mtb shoes. I might look into these for my Speedplay X cleats....
