I just picked this one up yesterday from the original owner, photos are as I brought it home. Crazy serial number, but can I assume it's a 1980? Can't wait to start working on it. Oh...and I got it for $60...

It looks like great paint remaining on this one oldbikenewbike. $60 is quite a good deal. I like everything about it but the saddle. Serial indicates 1979, catalog says the color is copper. This one is in nice shape! You have a great starting point, I canít wait to see the build.

I've begun taking it apart, and I already have a Brooks B72 saddle that will be going on. So far so good, and in better shape than I had thought. Here are a few more "as brought home" photos...

According to the Catalog page, the '79 model had chrome tip forks. So I guess that my frame was a left over and sold as a 1980 model.

Could be, or you may have a replacement fork from 1980. Catalogs photos are just a mock up though with a disclaimer saying that things are subject to change. The chrome on the fork tips is something that may have been eliminated mid year. Raleigh is famous for catalog discrepancies, as are a lot of other companies. The serial number is how you know for sure when this bike was built.

Edit: I just looked through the 1979 catalog for the USA market and it doesnít list nor depict chrome fork ends. The Super Grand Prix has them but not the Super Course. Youíre bike frame is catalog accurate and beautiful.

There is a Raleigh Super Coarse on the Albuquerque CL. Perhaps the misspelling reflects the gas motor provided with it. Not my listing.

Just discovered both stems are completely frozen. I think I'll put all the original stuff on the red one and leave the stem alone then sacrifice the stem on the repainted brownish one and rebuild it with upgraded components. Hate to cut of the GB stem though. (sigh)

Incredible find! What a price. I had a stuck stem on my old Peugeot when I bought it. I soaked the headtube in PB Blaster and left it upside down for a few days. It was still a fight, but it came out. Where did you find them for so little? The market in Canada for anything old bike is off the charts. What sizes?

They're both 23 1/2" I worked around the frozen stem to clean and lube the headset on the red one. It wouldn't budge. I tried the old, "cut off the top and hacksaw" trick for the stem. It's the first time that didn't work! I finally got larger and larger drill bits until I could chisel out the rest. I jumped on the deal. His thought was there's one good bike in there so it was $50 for a rusty bike that might work with a lotta work.
The red one is getting all the original stuff, Huet, Normandy, Nervar steel square taper cranks. Pictures will follow.
The brown one is probably getting a repaint and probably several upgrades.

Repainting is certainly the way to go for the brown one, itís already been repainted once so no harm there. Is the chrome missing on the brown one? Tough to tell from here. I see the paint has been scraped away to reveal some seriously high socks and long paintless stays. What color paint are you considering and will you be adding any decals?

Glad to here you were able to get the stem out of the red one somehow. Canít wait to see how that white head tube turns out, itís looking quite rusty but Iíll bet the paintís still pretty good under there. These are a couple of nice finds!

Very nice! The "Manettes a Grand Levier" downtube shifters suggest that it originally had Huret Luxe derailleurs. So, maybe a 1970 or '71?
