They both are neccessary: the stickies are for what their title says only, the individual threads allow the OP to sway what the topic of the thread might be, with regard to his pictures. maybe he also has a question like "that ding on the headtube..should I take it back to the lbs? did I get ripped off" and that definitely does not belong in the sticky.

I definitely think it is major a faux pas to post slightly offtopic commentary discussion in a sticky thread. Stickies are long as crap and we have to strive to stay strictly on topic on them. Countless many people watch the ebay thread for deals, I don't want to have to scroll through discussions on the finer points of liking pie to find them. The same with the picture thread, I want to see bike porn, not commentary about your preference for tig or lugs.

addendum: the war on christmas is fake brotha! it's all just a distraction so the news isn't talking about the war on st. patricks day. Which is a real war, no not a war -against- st patty's but there is actually going to be a war with ireland in march. (and they are going down!).

I wouldn't so much call this an argument?
Definitely one of the more civil discussions I've been involved in.

seems civil to me too. Maybe alexi is referring to my asterisked out swear words earlier in the thread. I always forget that most people dont use profantiy like i do.

argument as in the weight of discussion, not the yelling at each other kind of arguments

I see.
The latter seems to be the more common variety around here.

I find stickies annoying. I often ignore the top 5 posts on the page because they've been there forever. If I want to find something in a sticky I need to guess whether it was on page 151 or 157.

It's not that big a deal, but people are always saying we need a sticky for this common topic, and we need a sticky for that common topic. We need a bag sticky, and a budget frame sticky, and a gearing sticky, and a FAQ sticky, and another one about stripping hubs. If we add 7 more stickieswe won't be able to see the new threads at 1024x768 without scrolling down. WHY do new bike pics, and ebay finds deserve to dominate the top of the page? If people are really annoyed by having to pass over bag threads, and budget frame discussions would it be better to put them at the top of the page where they would have to skip over them every time they refreshed the page even if by some miracle people stopped talking about bags and cheap frames for a minute?

I have an idea, why not make a sticky for discussions of booze and pie since those seem to come up all the time, and we definitely need a hipster sticky! Why don't we sticky the music thread since it seems to rise from the dead every few days anyway. If we sticky enough threads, maybe there won't be any need to ever start any new threads at all. Don't post that gearing question! There's a sticky for that at the bottom of page 3!

In other words I disagree that all photos should be posted in the sticky. I think all stickies should die.

If it were PURELY photos and NO comments/reactions, then that's one thing but I think it's pretty much impossible to expect everyone, or anyone, to adhere to that.
That's why people make their own threads - they want people to notice their bike and to elicit discussion about it.
No harm whatsoever in doing that.

There is nothing inherently more wasteful about a picture thread than any other thread on here. What's boring and wasteful to someone is interesting and discussion-worthy to someone else. So, I say let people post whatever they want.
+1

I hate long sticky threads and never read them, because they are essentially many discussions in one thread. It's impossible to follow, and of course there always be the newbies who respond to something on page 2 from last year, confusing the hell out of everyone.

If people are really bothered by others posting their rides in own threads (I'm not), then the solution is to make a subforum for such threads, not to combine them into one single thread.

+1,000....my thing against the pic sticky is that half or more of it ISN'T PICTURES. it's ****ing annoying. when i click a thread that says "bike pics", i want to see bike pics, so i don't look there often. this is why i don't know the bikes many of you have unless you have them on a myspace or velospace page or on the FGG.
