my brand new bike

makes this HORRIBLE noise when you try to resist or skid...the chain feels like it's grinding and **** but the tension is nowhere near too tight. sugino XD cranks (3/32 chainring) on a UN 72, SRAM 1/8 chain on a rockworks 1/8 cog. it's really bad. this is the first time I've ever rocked all new parts, so I dont' know if I just need to break everything in or if I'm going to tear the teeth off of my chainring or what. any ideas?

Your cog is loose, and probably stripped by now.

negative. you're chain is just setting to your cog. that'll happen. and why come on here and ask the internet people when you could ask real people. ride **** out of the bike. it'll go away in a week. if i'm wrong (i'm not), come down to the shop and we'll take a look at it.

Chain setting to your cog?
What does that mean?

Every bike I've ever built up has had a perfectly quiet drivetrain right off the bat.

sounds like cog slippage or maybe a bottom bracket but it is probably the former

if the cog is a wide or your chain a bit narrow, it won't be quiet. had it happen. i think this more due to the rockworks cog.

and also, since when do slipping cogs make grinding noises?

I swapped a Shimano BMX freewheel for a track cog and had all sorts of noise too. Then I slapped on a 1/8 chain and the noise was gone. However, my chainline is sh*t anyway.

Did you check the chainline? If your bottom bracket is improperly sized or the designs of the chainring and cog are incompatable, it could cause some pretty nasty noise.

This is probably too simple, but are you sure the chain is 1/8"? Since the noise only happens when you apply backpressure, the cog sounds more likely, but the obvious things are the ones most commonly missed.

I think about half of the sound is the chain and the cog getting broken in (after putting a good 50+ miles on it, it's not nearly as bad as it was); I'm almost 100% it's not cog slippage.

jason, I ask internet people because last time I called you, you told me to put the headset up to the phone.

ps photos coming soon
