Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Yeah the worst crash I was in I don't remember. I'm kind of thankful for that.

pick a few routes with lots of traffic, activity and obstacles. promise yourself that you'll focus and ride as hard as you can.

anytime i have a wreck, i just promise myself that i'll focus harder on my surroundings and modulate my rides accordingly. it's so easy to get distracted or over-confident.

Worst idea ever.
We have those "cheese grater" bridges in Cleveland too.
Wet or dry they are slicker than frozen cat snot.

Smart.
I crashed my bike on W38th.
I got a Ti shoulder out of it.
A few months later I was driving my car down the same block and some guy coming the other way hit my car.
Some streets are just mean.

I still don't look at train tracks the same way. Eff 'em. But it does get better. Give it time as everyone said.

I broke my back riding a mountain bike, it was a freak occurance worst case scenario event.

My recovery ended up taking years of active lifestyle from me. When I eventually tried to ride that bike again, I broke into a sweat before I even started pedaling. After a very casual cruise in the neighborhood I stopped, as it was unpleasant feeling riding. Soon it was sold.

This past year a friend introduced me to his fixed Bianchi Pista Concept. I fell in love with it. A short time later I had my own bike. In no time I was riding fearlessly. I've had some wrecks, painful but not catastrophic, and they are no bother. Now my riding is often characterized as fearless and insane. I love it.

In short, the hardest part for me was recovering physically. Secondly, I think my big trust issue was in my equipment and not myself. Well, maybe a 60-40 split.

Get back on the horse, I say.

riding a bike is like riding a bike. you just gotta get back up and ride. start out slow, take your time and get comfortable and ride hard again.

After braking my arm on a dodge that truck event, I was spooked so much by side traffic that I suffered every city ride and more enjoyed the mountains. Now I'm readjusting, but I will ever remeber the painful event; it changed me some. That's life...go live.
As for ladies with scars...when you meet a chap who likes you, he shall touch and kiss those scars very tenderly. Keep on, screw the bridge, do what you can, and enjoy yourself - scars and all.

With hope I still remember how to ride after my last accident. My renters insurance is paying to replace my parts, so it's been almost a month long hassle, but free is free. Should have it back in full working order Tuesday. Can't ****ing wait.

I'm going to have to agree, that is a nasty bridge.

I would date a girl with scars on her face and love it. For every guy who says "Dude, your girlfriend has a nasty scar on her face" i would have to say "**** yes my girlfriend has a scar on her face."

Just like when we were kids.

Dust yourself off...

I feel your pain. I have been there. I looked a fine mess. Sitting atop my trainer, with my right arm in a sling. Well, not for at least two weeks until after surgery. Dr forbid my riding. Did not say anything about a trainer tho. I was mighthy sure the bike was properly attached . Feared I might have to go back to him while still under his care with some additional problem.

the one time a car really rammed into me with serious oomph*, i remember everything up to & after the crash, but not the actual "being hit, head hitting car, flying through the air, bicycle coming down on me" part. my knowledge of the crash itself is due to what the driver & a cyclist on the other side of the road told me. i was mostly fine, but it shook me up.

* it was ye olde lefte hooke; there were two lanes going the way i was going. i was in the right lane, going rather fast, and there was a car maybe 30 feet ahead of me in the left lane. apparently, the driver saw the car pass and didn't really even think to look for anything in the other lane. he was nice about it & very apologetic and everything (even called my cell phone the next day to make sure i was okay), but it's still kind of a bummer that, as a motorist, you can hit a cyclist & have absolutely zero negative effects on your insurance, but if you hit a street sign you're ****ed. what???

Thats not the case assuming you reported it and everything. I mean a motorist can hit another motorist and have zero negative insurance effects if noone reports the accident.
