Is this an Over Kill locking method?

First time commuting to new job in midtown. alot of shady characters around. I don't want my saddle stolen, so until i get a used crappy saddle i'm doing this.

Seems reasonable too me. In NYC, too much is never enough, if you don't mind carrying the weight of the locks.

Run a loop of chain through you saddle and frame and eletrical tape it taut. It will save you a lot of time, instead of trying to lock up like that each time.

No locking method is too overkill.

I hope you're not locking to that sign post for more than a few minutes. You don't want to come back after an hour or two to find a post with no sign and no bike.

I would try to lift that big loop in the chain over the post.
I assume there is a small no parking sign at the top.

the post is like 10' tall. how would you do that without a ladder? by this time next week i'll install a beater seat, and change the handlebars to cheap road bars and install a front brake with road levers.

your set up looks ok to me, but you might want to mini-u the front end to a thick pole/meter. Yoshi ain't crazy, I have seen the bike tossed over the green pole.

you jump up on a car quickly, pull the bike up, hop off the car and stroll off. it takes less than a minute if you don't need to remove a sign at the top of the post.

if you dont want to carry the locks, just leave them locked to the thing you use every day.

and who here has ever first hand had their bike stolen from the post lifting method, or seen it happen?

I've "stolen" a friend's bike this way. A buddy and I were able to lift my friend's Bianchi over a sign post even though it was a good 9-10 feet tall. Didn't take more than a 1/2 a minute. Anyways, we ducked around a corner and waited for my friend to finish class. The beating we got after he found us was worth seeing his reaction to his "stolen" bike.

Me n a few buds stopped a pathetic bike thief taking a fellow messers bike off a sign post just like that one there, 5-7 years ago. The trick he used was to simply pull the sign back and forth repeatedly until after just 2 minutes or so the post snapped at the base. Lift pole through locks & discard. He was drunk and insensible, gave back the bike without getting his ass kicked while we complimented the novel no tools approach he'd used on the signpost.

No passerbys did anything to stop the fellow, lots of people watched

edit: jeez I'm getting old, that was like 9 years ago

My friend and his girlfriend had their bikes locked (fuggedaboutit) to a post with three signs on it. A few hours later they came back and there was a post with no signs and no bikes.

Sure, I think you mean Yoshi, but the theft I was telling about happened after lunch in the smack of dowtown houston in front of a high dollar bank tower. People are even less likely to jack with someone jacking something in NYC imo

I actually don't know when/where this happened (I'll have to ask him) but I don't think it was in NYC. That said, the Neistat brothers made a video of them stealing their own bike in various ways in various locations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TNTq...amist%2Ecom%2F

Very eye opening.

I have had it happen to friends, and don't count on NYC'ers to stop someone from stealing your bike.
