The enthusiasts around here do love to see restores. It'd be welcome, no doubt. Is it the Ciocc you're planning to restore or the Scwhinn or both?

The Ciocc is in amazing original condition. It came with Shimano Tri-Color 600. I'm actually afraid to ride it. I don't want to damage it.

I got the Schwinn apart yesterday. I swung by Paragon Machine Works in Richmond and picked up a tubing block and rolled out the top tube dent as well as I could. I need to fill the dimple with stuff. I called the power coat folks and they told me to used hi-temp JB Weld on it. I'm not sure I'm going to paint it or PC it. I have a friend who restores old BMW motorcycles who does amazing work. I asked him to supervise me while painting. He just grumbled....lol

I got a great deal on some NOS silver Mavic Open Pro rims, a Nitto mustache bar, and some SPD pedals at the Re-Cyclery charity place in San Rafael....

That's where I am at the moment with the Schwinn.

I just finished up a Fuji Track Classic with some porteur bars, huge platform petals, some aero bar-end brakes, full fenders, and orange, shellac'd cotton bar tape..it looks so cool....waiting for the bars to cure completely before I test it out...

UPDATE! Interim build with Frankengruppo (Sachs/Campy/Shimano) group complete! I had to get a zero setback seatpost to put the saddle in the right place fore/aft, and a shorter stem that not only puts the bars in the right place but also doesn't clash with the gray of the titanium and the bright silver of the aluminum by being the blue/gray of stainless steel.



But don't blink, because I decided I'd take the half-a-groupset of 7410 Dura Ace I have, add the other half, and re-build it with that - 8 speed Dura Ace, same year as the frame, and will end up being the bike I wanted in 1995.

Getting the latest version of my humble Humber together today. The bike surprisingly comes in at 28.5 pounds as shown. Undid the Sturmey Archer AW and relaced the Normandy high flange. Had been having trouble dropping the chain in lowest gear, even with freewheel spacers of varying thicknesses. It turns out that on the outward facing side of the small chainring, the teeth were only beveled about 1/3 of the way around. Light touches on the bench grinder took care of that.

...needed a new MTB hub for my '91 Trek 750. So the old rim was in decent shape, so reused the rim and spokes, but added a new Deore Hub and new nipples.




Lacing is complete but I'm traveling for work and forgot my truing stand for the final work. So far so good though.

Wow, you're really slipping! Before my "separation" I traveled a lot for work and NEVER forgot my truing stand. That always went into the suitcase first, then the tooth brush and socks. Oh yeah, forget neck ties and black shoes but not the truing stand.

You may need an intervention for sumptin. Granted the truing stand was awkward once TSA stood up and got fussy, but, hey, you never know huh? Be prepared, they always say. 😄

Next at you'll tell us you've been forgetting your Suntour four prong FW puller. Kids these days....

The previous hub took a four prog tool to remove the Suntour Freewheel first before I took the wheel apart. It's so funny you called it. I travel to a few factories for work and a couple of them are driving distance so I bring bike stuff with me to work on.

Don't say gaspipe, it's triggering. The bike clearly self identifies as Motolite, and that's "High Resiliency Tubing". Says so right on the label.

BOTL '82 Moto that replaced my stolen PX10 during the last year of college.

63.5 cm frame hopped up with DT indexed shifting, an 8 speed freehub, campy 170mm crankset (pretty fancy, eh!), and new hubs and rims.

Revived and now my north Queens rider.

Well......just to show that I do have a bike life out of the C&V world. The only one I've been tinkering with this week is a brand new Trek mountain bike. Knees are so bad now that I have to admit my hiking days are over. Yet I need to be up on the trails in the mountains to keep my sanity, hence the new bike. So I've been sorting out the fit, pedals, going over the build up to make sure it's safe, etc. First outing hopefully tomorrow.

Drug out of mothballs from the shed where it was partially disassembled under a mountain of junk including several bicycles of course.

Its now resting in the garage of a good friend that is an expert world class painter, restorer, fabricator, builder and a lot more.

As soon as we get done with the V Max hes working on, we will start on this in earnest.

Turbo, carb, heat shields and hopefully more bits still to be retrieved from the pile, getting this out was an ordeal by itself.

This is an early one, actual 78, the one you posted is a 79 but was still based on a 78's bought for the original run.

The 78's have the same regular paint as a standard Z1R.

They also changed several other things for 79, spyder header that mine was upgraded to and several other things, mine came with the original "log" exhaust manifold too.

I have a friend that has a 79 black, orange and yellow one like in the video, he's had it for a long time, comes from a family of drag racers and he ran it quite a bit.

I saw him run it several times, what a handful, lit the tire up in 3rd gear and incinerated it from the 1/8th mile to the end of the 1/4 mile.

Don't remember the ET but it was still very respectable all things considered.

Going to be reaching out to him so may get some numbers.

One of the magazines got one down in the 10's without scattering it, they were very weak in stock form for this.

They sorely needed a rev limiter, stronger valve springs, welded crank, undercut trans, never mind turbo cams, O ringed head, HD studs, main cap plate and plenty more.

Between a house renovation gone sideways and a major product release at work I need a project to keep me sane. I started with stripping down the Falcon I got in the fall, thinking I’d tidy it up and be ready for some period-correct fun in the spring. I determined that there was more work to be done on the frame surfaces than I thought. Paint isn’t original so I’ve filed that away for the warmer weather when I intend to strip, treat the rusty bits, prime and repaint. I’m thinking of going the spray.bike route for that, and the upstate house has a shed that will make a great spray booth.





So I’ll turn my attention to the Grand Jubile mixte. When I got it there was evidence of some knocks, but not those of a crash: there’s a small bend in the chain stay above the brake bridge and it looks like a steel rimmed rear wheel from a Mirage was swapped in, but it didn’t present any major weirdness on a short checkout ride and the price was lower that I could get for the Jubilee changers and Stronglight 49 so I figured I wouldn’t be out anything and I’d work with it. First order of business was securing a set of sympathetic 700c wheels from our friend recarcar. Nothing better than taking the Subway to Brooklyn to pick up bike parts! In swapping the wheels it’s clear that the forks are out of alignment, the dropouts are too close together. Thinking about the wheel, chainstay and fork spacing I’m wondering if it got backed into in a garage or such like. I’m going to measure it up and see what’s to be done. I have a sense that I think I can bring it back, and I hope so because I want to have fun polishing up all those nice French bits!

One more wheelbuild to the mix.

The Sturmey Archer XL-RD5(w) 5-speed hub I built into a H+Son Archetype rim for the Koga-Miyata SilverAce was slowly killing itself. Those hubs share a lot of parts with the classic AW hubs but this one was on my commuter, and a slight misalignment will slowly kill these hubs.
And unfortunately that was exactly what it was doing.


Note the chipped edges on both of these parts.

So, it was time to replace the hub with something a bit more reliable. In went the modern RXL-RD5 5-speed model. This one uses a rotary gear selector and a larger barreled thumb shifter so it should be slightly less fussy. Plus these newer models have eliminated the in-between gear option on a misshift.
Not as sleek as the old one but on my commuter bike I just want something reliable.
