New bike, new to road riding...Hello everyone!
Hello everyone,
First post here.
Got me a Schwinn hybird from Walmart back in April 2018. Schwinn-700c-Men-s-Pathway-Multi-Use-Bike (cant post a link??)
Started riding around the sub-division here in Round Rock Texas. First few rides around 3-7 miles felt incredible.
Some backstory, in FEB 2004 was involved in a motorcycle wreck....put me in a wheelchair for 11 months, 13x surgeries total between my right knee and left hip... Until that point in my life I was a RUNNER....prolly ran 20 miles a week loved the feeling (runners high) and physical fitness that came with it...
After the wreck doctors told me no more running ever again (tore and had both meniscus replaced).... So fast forward to 2018 and overall not pleased with my fitness and activity levels so purchased that Walmart bike on a whim to see if it was a good match for me...
Lo and behold, after three weeks of riding I had zero knew pain....once or twice I got some pain behind the knee...made a seat adjustment, got some pain on the top of knee, made a petal adjustment, and so on an so forth and each time the pain improved and went away....Got some lateral pain in the knee, adjusted my toes slightly pointed outward (on bad right side) and that took care of that!
Started having my junk go numb a few times so researched some different bike seats...finally ended up on a Selle Atomica (lol pretty sure i spelled that wrong) and all the numbness went away!
So anyways, after three weeks of riding I was HOOKED....It was wild...I started riding a motorcycle at 13 (limited to 250cc in Oklahoma) and strangely enough this road biking was hitting all the same pleasure centers in the brain!
I used a biking app to track progress and over the coming months I had worked up to 25 mile workouts 3x per week. I easily hit my goal of 1000 miles by Xmas in 2018! Replaced a chain, couple flats, other routine maintenance and I was so very surprised that the Schwinn held up so well!
Then in June of this year I purchased my first real bike a Giant Contend SL 1 Disc (M/L). Wow what a machine this bike has turned out to be!
Here is my recent ride this weekend: strava.com/activities/2490016431
So far really loving this bike, and I believe I will hit my goal of 1600 miles by the end of year (225 miles in June alone!).
So I guess not really a point to all this, just wanted to say hi and start becoming involved in the cycling community.

You riding the same shoes, jerseys, bibs, computer? I bet those things have increased in price even if you haven’t bought a new bike.
And you’re the anomaly, not the standard when it comes to that.

The thing about road bikes, is they're efficient. And expensive ones are a little bit more efficient... even non-gearheads can get sucked in.
Enjoy your journey, mate

As a matter of fact I AM riding with the same 35 yo Detto shoes and jersey I bought with the bike. The bib is new because the shorts finally gave out. The computer is 20 yo. Living proof that qualiy lasts. Did I mention that the Helicomatic transmission is still working well?

I recently bought a new a new bike to replace a 25+ year old Bianchi Virata. It was a great bike but 8 speed Ultegra downtube vs 11 speed 105 brifters is a sea change. Not to mention the weight difference between lugged Tange Ultralight and 10r Specialized carbon.

That 20 yo computer is not lacking in any thing FOR ME. I'm 64 yo. I'm not in training for any thing. It tells ME every thing I need/want to know. I don't care about cadence (if it feels good, I do it), watts, or any other voo-doo. I ride for the enjoyment, not to try to kill mineself. And I'm not a weight-weenie. Trust me, it's the motor, NOT the vehicle.

Like I said you’re not the norm. And how anyone can make wearable items like shoes and a Jersey last 35 years is beyond me. I’ve had shoes that sat in my closet for a couple years start to come apart, you must have the strongest shoes ever made.

It's not BS. I learned how to take care of my stuff a L-O-N-G time ago. As Walter Brennen would've said, ( courtesy of the old "Guns of Will Sonnet" tv series from about 50 years ago), "No brag, just fact".
