A guy I know, a bit of a local legend, in fact, used to ride without a helmet. He was super strong and loved to take pictures, and would post them on Strava and IG, which shows him sans helmet, solo, of course. Last year he had horrific crash, but fortunately had his lid on, and man, the damage to the helmet was just unbelievable! He survived it.

Having said that, I sometimes ride around the neighbourhood on my old mtb without a helmet for groceries and coffee, and such, or with the kids on the trails. But I always wear a helmet when riding solo on my road bike or with a group.

I used to wear one about 50% of the time. Then November 2012 had an over-the-bar crash and landed on the back of my head. Fortunately had a helmet on that ride. Saved me several days in the hospital I'm sure. Always wear one.

Right, but it's always been active and is where all these solo helmet threads get dumped by the mods when they get out of hand. Fun times for some.

I have extraordinary powers of prediction, therefore, I don't need a helmet on any particular ride. It's great to know this before I leave the house and the helmet behind.
However, next Thursday I'm scheduled to crash on Valley Road at the Bonnie Burn Road intersection around 6:07am, so I will be wearing my helmet that day.

You be sure to always wear your body armour when riding as well. And you better wear your helmet when driving since more motorist than cyclist die from head injuries.

I don't care at all about statistics, except for not wanting to become one. I've cracked three helmets since I started riding in 2015, but have cracked zero skulls. I don't care what strangers do, but I wear a helmet.

Now if I can just get a helmet to last more than 2 years.

Seemed like a provoking thread, without much reasoning.... I'll semi-play along and just say that while I helmet for FOD protection, I expect a VAST amount of cager correction before addressing cyclists. Go where the numbers are first....

I do not wear a helmet for safety but to be a role model for my kids. I cannot expect them to wear one if I am not willing to.

If it’s not for safety, why do you care if your kids wear one? For fashion? Social acceptance?

I'm glad I'm a cyclist and not a biker!

I normally ride with a helmet, but if I'm riding with the family at lower speed I don't bother. (I don't wear one whilst walking, either.)

For kids that tend to fall off bicycles by tipping to the side, helmets do provide protection. For mountain bikers that sometimes bang their heads into trees and low hanging branches, they provide some protection, mostly abrasion protection. For adults riding faster than their 5 year olds speed, the helmet is just makes money for the manufacturer.

I have never split my head open road cycling with near daily commute riding since 1982, I learned how to fall in gym tumbling classes.

As someone who is eventually going to need a transplanted organ; I wholeheartedly support the right of anyone over the age of 18 to ride without a helmet. (bicycle or motorcycle)

I was going faster than 5mph when I wiped out and my helmeted head actually bounced on the pavement. Another bicyclist riding a ways behind me was all ready to call 911 because he saw that bounce. He was about 100 yards behind me when the fall happened. I got up, cleaned off some scrapes on my shoulder and arm, checked the bike for damage and then continued my ride.

Another time I saw a fellow who was not wearing a helmet wipe out at a fairly low speed. He hit his head got a few lacerations and bled quite profusely for some time. He refused medical attention and rode off.

A helmet can protect from certain things but not everything. I think it should be an individual's choice whether or not to wear a helmet.

Cheers

Last Sept. / Oct. I drove thru 19 states and 4 provinces with NO seat belt. LOL
Car won't let me cruise, oh well.
I have been in 8 fenderbenders going back to 1965, NO seat belt, no injury.

If your powers are that good, why not just adjust your training so that is a rest day? (I always wear a helmet and have yet to find they make crashing fun.)

Yeah. My first helmet made $35 for Bell (and about half that for the replacement), thousands for the local hospital and the local morgue was cut out of the action completely. I've paid taxes ever since. That helmet, the most expensive thing I ever put on a bike.

Actually, that first helmet made hundreds for Bell. In the following years, I used to go into area bikeshops I'd never been in before, go to the newly set up helmet display and wait for the salesman to come over and tell me about my accident. Never failed, It was kinda fun.

Ben
