Addiction 2022.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weird place. Our 30-mile wide county only has two "townships," and one of those is in the corner.

Yes, but I had a sense that I messed up the micro-connections. It's not easily done with a newer smartphone. Might be better to pay someone who does it all the time.

My Roomba battery died in my old machine. I'm debating whether to buy a new battery or not, the machine has seen better days but is still 80-85% effective.

Those that get it fall into the "old" and "old AF" categories, I believe.

Johnny Carson retiring was one of those things that hit me with the reality that nothing is permanent. When I was growing up, Carson and Ed McMahon seemed permanent, like things always seem when you're young.

In a thrifty move perhaps only you will appreciate, I'm not paying $1,000 for a phone. "F that noise," to quote a drug user here.

I'm getting an ancient one which still should have two or so years of life. May require an eventual battery replacement.

It's not real cycling, but an indicator of the sport in society at large.

It's the indicator of the performance of one company. I haven't been watching that market closely, but I get the impression that there are a growing number of competitors at a more budget-friendly price point. Meanwhile, I see HS MTB teams in my area growing every year. A good friend is the head coach of one team, and the only sport at that school with more participation is football.

I approve. I am running an iPhone 8 while the rest of my family, I believe are on the 6 or 6s.

You can likely get a battery replaced at one of those ifixit kiosks for $50-75.

Have you ever had a screen replaced? I've got some cracks on one edge of the screen with a few hairlines spreading across. I'd like it to be pretty and clean again, but the phone is still fully functional (other than the under-the-glass fingerprint reader) and I've seen estimates in the $200 neighborhood, so I'm hesitant to do anything about it just yet.

iPhone? I thought you were on Android. iPhone screens are in general easy to replace. Depending on the model, Androids might be easy too. But if you have to remove a lot of components, it might be better to leave it to someone who has done a few before. Watch a couple videos.
I've done a few screens and some batteries as well. It does help to have a good toolkit with the prybars and spudgers and a pair of curved fine tip tweezers to lift connectors and cables.

I have not done that, but my understanding is that the screen replacement is more labor-intensive (and thus more costly) than a battery replacement. I have been lucky that all our phones' screens have held up ok.

Could be an indicator of a company that overcharges. And whose stock got way way way overvalued last year.

I'm looking at 8 pluses. They seem fine for my current needs.

Yeah, I'm on Android, but assumed that replacements would generally be similar. I watched some videos on how to do it, but decided not to attempt it myself - replacing the screen looks to be expensive from a parts standpoint, whereas replacing the glass was a little too involved for me (doing stuff like separating the glass from the screen with a fishing line would give me anxiety).

Agreed. The iPhone screens I have done have been simple full screen assembly swaps. The one android I had a while back, I had done by one of those quick fix places.
