Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

People camp year round at the beaches here. A bunch of my friends and I camped at the beach for Y2K. It was chilly but I had a camper.

Dirt biking we camped year round in the desert, though it got pretty cold. That was what made me never want to sleep in a tent again, freezing in a tent. Got a small camper with a propane heater and it was great. The best time of year for dirt bikes in the desert is winter, except the time there was a freak storm that dumped 2 feet of snow. I couldn't ride in that.

I have too, but in a tent or in a lean-to. The coldest nights were in the minus-teens. It was fun at the time, but can you imagine doing it with an old man’s bladder?

Bags pretty much packed. It turns out daughter #1, who is also going to LA along with her 2 roommates, is checking one bag so I am asking her to be my mule for my bike tools.

No, I can't. I never tented in the minus teens, maybe only into the plus twenties, where ice formed on the tent from my breath. I never had a good sleeping bag, though. Not one rated for low temps, anyway.

I was young, it was a starry night, and I had a down sleeping bag.

Oh yeah, I remember what it was like to have that little shower of frost on my face when the wind rippled the nylon. LSS and I had a great 4-season tent, but the inner layer didn’t breath quiiiite well enough to prevent that sometimes.

I have a confession to make: I spent a night in Dyersville, IA while riding across the country. No one in the group rode out to the field. It was around 100 degrees when we pulled into town and very humid in August. And I’ve never even seen the film.

Camping for seasoned citizens is like sky diving. Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Why camp when you have a comfortable bed in a climate controlled home?

So I'm told.

I once took a long weekend tour to S. Jersey in mid-December. Highs in the 60s and 70s. Perfect weather.

I figured that out years ago, and I'm not even old.

Way ahead of you.

That's where the RV comes in handy. I only had a truck camper and it's still so much nicer than sleeping in a tent.

I could camp. In a hotel. “Camp” means “country”; I could totally stay in a hotel in the country.
