Could not disagree more. Full coverage hammered Al fenders are HOT.

I think to me the problem with fender looks is that close fitting fenders are percieved as one with the wheels, but since they cover just half a wheel or less, they make the wheels look somehow incomplete. And the colour or finish of the fenders play little to no role in this; actually the more they stand out from the background formed by tires, the worse it is. Shorter fenders lessen the effect, but are of little use.

Yeah I got the Beavertail clip on fenders so I could easily take them off when I load the bike in the back of my van, but the BB area and adjoining tubes (and my feet) can still get wet and messy.

OTOH, they do a decent job of protecting the rest of me and the rest of the bike.

Still, I think I will try to find something full length and able to handle 26x2.2. If it can be easy to install and remove, so much the better. And definitely time to get long fenders for the Schwinn running 700x32.

I’ve recently concluded that, to look good, fenders need to match either the rims or the frame.

Matching to the frame is, IMO, very good looking and surprisingly minimalist.

I have grey rims (similar to Archetype hard ano) and whenever I wash the bike the black Planet Bike fenders look jarring. I always wish I’d left it dirty. I expect the PDW fenders would aesthetically work better than black or some bare alloy, definitely better than SKS silver.

Seeing bare alloy fenders with black rims gets a thumbs down from me, as does the other way round.

if you have the budget though, I’d definitely recommend getting whatever alloy fenders will fit and have their mounting hardware on the outside (unlike PB & SKS), and getting both your frame and the fenders painted/powdercoated at the same time.

A little custom paint helps with the aesthetics - these are Velo Orange fenders with homemade leather front mudflap.

I need to pipe in on this one.
The "fitness/hybrid" came out decades before the term gravel bike was even coined.
It's the gravel bike that is a fitness/hybrid bike with drop bars.

chain guards are also awesome especially on upright bikes. Fenders, chain guards, racks, and baskets are the best for utility cycling

I agree that painted to match are the best!

PDW full metal fenders work well on more modern bikes. Forgive my untaped handlebars. I was experimenting with different bars.

For some reason no effort has been spent by the bike industry to make fenders that look good on the bikes that need them the most. $200 hammered fenders are pretty on a polished old steel bike and painted fenders look good on a cruiser. But if you have a Trek FX there really ought to be something better looking than Longboards

Honjo fenders are also available from Sim Works and they might have a better selection than Rene Herse, I have not checked

At the risk of turning this into a Hot or Not thread....

1. That bag and bar tape couldn't clash any worse than they do.

2. Water bottles don't match.

3. Overall theme is black/grey/silver, right down to the saddle and (non-matching) water bottle, so the gum wall tires stick out like sore thumbs. (See Mo's bike above for the proper way to add a splash to an overall black/grey/silver scheme.)

Other than the purple tape and bag, I would say it all works very well.

Of course, that is like saying other than starting the El Dorado wildfire, the Gender Reveal Party went very well.

I had never seriously considered fenders for my Fog Cutter until seeing this. Good Lord, that is hot. Are these the color matched Tanaka fenders from Soma?

Unfortunately, Soma botched the fender mount on my frame.

That's a great installation job. Did you do that yourself? If so, how long did it take you? How much, if any, modification did you have to do?

That was my very first fender install, so it took a bit longer. That one took me about two hours total (including test ride). I'm down to about an hour to fit and modify plastic fenders. And I don't even have to modify that much, just optimise stuff. For example, SKS uses an absurdly long plastic rivet to hold the mudflap on. I remove the rivet and replace it with the shortest screw and nut that's included in the box. I also cut the inside of the mudflap off and glue the flap in place (gives additional tire clearance). Last, I superglue the strut plates (the bent sheet metal on the inside of the fender) in place to add rigidity. That's it.

Your 2 statements are in partial conflict.

A black frame with silver rims is enhanced by black or silver fenders. I could see either as looking good. Like a tux with a nice stainless steel or titanium chronometer watch.

A black frame with black rims and black fenders would be fine for Batman and other devotees of flat black components and rims. But since black components and rims are not one of my favorite features, either with or without fenders, I would pass.
