I’m really enjoying the SS MTB.
Spinning uphill, coasting down , which is what I do with a geared bike , but for some reason the spinning seems easier with the SS even though I shift into a bigger rear gear on the geared bike . I’m faster going up most hills around here too.
Thinking of converting my Hardrock to SS .

Did my longest ride so far today, 40 miles/64.5km round trip, through Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

That brings me to 505 miles / 813km for July. I believe that's my most to date, during the month in which I turned 55.

I need a way to carry more than one water bottle, though.

Apparently did some damage to the bike in the last quarter mile of my ride on the 25th, as when I mounted for the 26th, I had a wobble in my wheel and did not feel comfortable proceeding. Dismounted and found three broken spokes. Those lovely streets around my town must've done a doozy.

Sure is easy to rack up miles down there, isn't it? I haven't been down there in a while - been riding up in Geauga County near home...

I hadn't been there since June, when I did the "Bike Aboard." Yesterday I arrived about 10 minutes after the train departed and was pleased with myself in beating it to Botzum. I thought about going on to Akron and catching the train back, but I decided to make a round trip. (I figured if I became too bonked I could make it to one of the train stops.) I really slowed the last few miles, though, as I had ran out of water (my bike only has braze-ons for one bottle cage). I would have run out sooner, but the people at the farmers' market let me refill from the sink. Anyway, I'm glad I made the trip out.

As for Maple Highlands, I went on the trail south of Middlefield and on to Swine Creek Reservation a couple times last week. I'm still very hesitant to ride on roads with motor vehicles, but I saw a way to avoid the 87 / 608 intersection. And I figured traffic is slow there and most drivers are used to watching for buggies. By the way I saw an alert that the portion from Tare Creek to the fire station is closed for emergency repairs the next few days.

I'm guessing you crossed to the southern section behind the pharmacy? I don't love road riding but usually just grin and bear it for 608/87. Bridge Road is a nightmare so I haven't been to SCR this year.

Next time I use the Bike Aboard I'll go down to Akron and see if I can beat the train back. I got surprisingly far ahead from Rockside to Botzum station; I was headed back north and passed it (headed south) in a section where the trail is alongside the tracks, so I waved to the Bike Aboard cars.

Where Maple Highlands ends behind the fire station, I went to the right to the Dollar General lot and crossed 87 into the Arby's lot to get to Sperry Road. Then to 608 and the archery store lot, down to Johnson, and back on the trail. My Bridge Road experience wasn't too bad. It was bumpy, especially at the bottom of the hills, so I was happy to have a suspension fork and big tires. The only traffic I encountered was a guy on his Harley and a buggy in SCR.

sitting at 360 for the month, and should end it between 410 and 430. Saturday is supposed to be a broiler....so will see if I can eek out 40 before the heat and humidity take its toll.

got in 31 today, it was overcast early this morning, so that helped keep the broiling morning sun to a minimum. So sitting on 390, still shooting for 40 tomorrow.

Last Ride of July

50km this morning for a total of 351km since July 24. My goal had been 250km.

I am looking forward to trying for 1000km in August, if all goes well.

Dusted off my old Ragley parts-cycle and did our local Critical (m)Ass ride. It's just everyone who goes to the bar by my house, doing a bar-hop. Figured I didn't need the new Kona getting scuffed up...
