Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Low 40s this morning and we'll be topping out in the high 40s. Gloomy 40s, too, not the bright and cheery 40s. I'm so not mentally ready for riding in this, yet.

That entered my mind but I figured it might be more nuanced.

Yes, but I'm not to that desperate, dead-of-the-winter mode where I *need* to get in a ride, real or fake; I might be able to take the day off without feeling like a schlub.

It's funny how a day like that in October or April is usually skipped, while a day with the same conditions in January is like a gift from the weather cycling gods.

Absolutely - it's all about context.

I think that I will get out for a ride, though. It's really that initial chill that I'm dreading, so I think that I'll slightly overdress to overcome that. Once underway, I can decide whether I want to keep it easy or if I want to unzip a bit and turn it up. I'm guessing that I'll keep it easy

So I put on my SS base layer, bibs, socks, tights, LS jersey, vest gilet, gaiter, lightweight wool hat, gloves, helmet, and glasses. Filled up my water bottle, went downstairs, aired up the tires, carried my bike up, opened the back door... and saw the rain coming down.

Throw a rain cape over all that. Then, if you're like me, you get even more soaked from the sweat than you would from the rain.

'Pose to get close to 80 here in the big city. Brought shorts and a T-shirt to change into for the walk home.

Rain, BTW, is one thing I've gotten thoroughly messed up about, from living in CA. I looked into climate in a number of places. I heard something about Pittsburgh having a lot of rain, so I looked at Buffalo and Lancaster, and they have just about as much rain as Pgh. So then I looked at where I grew up, around Gettysburg, and damned if it's not just the same! Like maybe once a week or more often it rains. I think I'd largely forgotten that.

Also, in looking at the climate, I'd been worried that Pittsburgh would be too cold, but it turns out it's only slightly colder than Gettysburg.

Google is wrong. Mrs datlas confirmed it's on ABC. Of course I am at work and cannot watch it.

Our first lasted from march 18 to december 20, We just replaced the second. 22 months. I'd keep an eye on it, especially during the cold months. It doesn't get weaker, and then die; it just dies. I took the old one back to Autozone, where I bought it, and they gave me $70 credit from the 5 year warranty. I doubt Honda would do that.
And the smart charging is on gasoline engines too. They try to improve the gas mileage by means of a) slowing the rpm and b) smart charging, among other things, I'm sure, Driving in 'eco' mode keeps the rpm down as well, though I don't know how that would affect charging, over the long haul. It appears we can have either decent gas mileage or decent battery life, but not both.

Comcast had some stupid videos playing. I told the security guard how they used to show the afternoon playoff games back in '08.

I'm not a Honda tech but the only "Smart Charging" I know about is for the electric cars. They couldn't turn the alternator off on a gas car to save load, if they did the load would be greater when they turned it back on. No free lunch.

I suspect your earlier theory is closer to the mark, the one about the battery being too small. Also, I think battery life is greatly dependent on luck.

I was hoping you'd weigh in. Thanks! The general consensus on the forum is that the key off draws on the battery are too great for the size of the battery. Unless it is commuted in every day, for a significant period of time, it doesn't charge fully. We take public transport whenever we can, because we hate driving in the city, so the car gets used little. maybe once a week sometimes. One poster postulated that if is let sit for a full week without being started, the offline draws would completely drain the battery, at least for being able to start it. I'm going to get a voltmeter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, in order to keep tabs on it. And maybe a portable jump start unit. Seems like it would be handy to have.
