Anyone have experience with Spyre disk calipers? They are a straight mechanical cable pull caliper. Trying to get a feel for what will work on the disk bike if/when I pull the 12 speed stuff off it.

No experience, but last I heard (when they were OEM on the first disc brake tri bikes) they required frequent adjustment due to... something in the design that I don't remember.

I had Spyres on my first CX bike. They work great.

All cable operated brakes require small adjustments as the pads wear.

Make sure you go in with your eyes wide open. There are several things you need to know about them to determine whether they are an appropriate investment:

1. The rate is a combination of a fixed rate and a composite rate. The composite rate is adjusted every six months, and is adjusted based on inflation factors. The composite rate can go to zero. Currently the fixed rate component is 0%. With the adjustment of the composite rate, there is a potential that it could also reduce to 0% leaving you with an investment that does not grow at all.

2. You cannot cash out the bond in the first 12 months. After that, you can cash out the bond in the next 48 months, but you forfeit 3 month's interest.

The good thing is that the tax on the interest is deferable until you cash out. They may be a good investment for some in times of inflation, but not so good during times of minimal to no inflation.

For money you don't need in the next year, it's a guaranteed 8%+ (if you buy before May). This is the only real downside.

No question that savings/money market accounts have not been a good place to store money in recent years. The bond market has not been good either.

I'm not dissing your idea. Just wanted to point out some risks. If you won't need the money for 18 months, it's a good deal for cash reserves at this time, although the amount you can stash is relatively small.

That would be true for money you don't need for 5 years since you have the 3-month interest forfeiture if you cash out before then.

Even with the forfeiture though, the return would be far better than money market or savings accounts.

It only took a few replies. Surprisingly, no one has suggested leaving a water bottle at home. That usually comes up in weight related questions.
