Tore down my recently acquired '97 Stowaway today. It's getting a major mechanical upgrade. OK, I'm keeping the frame fork, handle bars, fenders and rack LOL. New wheels and tires, freewheel, rear derailleur, chain, crankset, pedals, grips, saddle, brake calipers and cables. After tearing it down I decided to get new brake levers since everything else will be nice and new. I also found out it needs a new headset, the bearings were flat spotted and the cups grooved! Bottom bracket looked like brand new but WTH, might as well replace it too. I have a bunch of new cartridge BB's that will work and I rather use self sealing bolts with the new crankset than the old school flange nuts and the scarred up dust caps. The crankset and saddle will move over to my Boardwalk, it currently has a cheap and uncomfortable vinyl saddle and an all steel crankset. I ordered a new seat post but it's gone MIA...... at least the old one is aluminum but I wanted to move it to my Boardwalk too.

BIke is almost complete but my ProLite seatpost isn't going to arrive until the 23rd or 24th and tomorrow, the 22nd, I go in for the first of two knee replacement surgeries. I'll be able to at least work on it in a couple weeks and finish it up but won't be able to ride it for a few weeks. I bought it specifically fo aid in my recovery once I get enough range of movement back because of the low top tube height. It's my springboard back into cycling after my surgeries.

A couple quick notes, the rear wheel required a fair bit of truing, 2 spokes were just plain loose and I couldn't install the cartridge BB because the chain stays protrude in to the BB shell too far. A problem I've encountered more than once on older bikes.

Thank you, yes I'm doing great, went back to work on Monday. I've been riding it for about a month now and have been riding some of my MTB's in the past week or so and even took our new to us tandem for a short solo ride, I'm not up to having a stoker just yet . The mounts and dismounts aren't too pretty LOL but once I'm on it's all good. It will come back slowly. With the realignments they did on my lower legs I think I can put the SPD's back on my bikes. My feet are parallel to the bike now and hit the pedals dead center side to side.

I just saved four of these from the scrap heap. Just couldn't see them melted, but really don't want them. Are these worth anything to anybody?

If I restore it will only be to ride able condition, then to give away.

I may need technical advise.
