so what is the signifier to look at when a peugeot pops up?
uo, ua, pa, px wtf etc — kinda hard to get it unless you are born as a peugeot expert.
and lotta 'bay sellers list 'record du monde' thing in which i believe doing nothing with the model name or so.

(would also appreciate any former link on how to spot right peugeot as well)
thanks!

Does this Peugeot Super Competition count? I now have a fork for the bike and seek only the stupid front derailleur before I start the project.

Look for ads without any pictures and descriptions like "Old 10-speed bike -Want it gone today". These are the best deals on PX-10s.

Seriously, there was a fair amount of variation in PX10s over the years an they can be hard to spot. I don't know if anything is hard and fast, (especially with tubing labels falling victim to time) but I hope this helps:
  • Slanted Reynolds 531 labels variously placed on ST or DTs
  • Reynolds labels on the fork (most but not all came with them)
  • "Inoxydable" label on the ST
  • Half-chromed stays (on most earlier vintages)
  • 26.4 Simplex seat post (with fancy Nevex lugs)
  • 26.6 seat post (with plain lugs)
  • Stronglight alloy non-cottered crank
  • Mavic Racer or Competition center pulls
  • Lugs painted black to contrast with frame
  • Lugs NOT painted black to contrast with frame
  • Tubular rims
(most I've seen have been replaced with clinchers)

I am sure the experts here could add to the list of cues.

Nice one RK1963.

Some beautiful bikes shown here. Thanks to all that are posting pictures.

In the mid '80s I bought quite a few PX-10s from a local university at the end of the school year for $25-40 a piece and then resold them. Seems they were the near top of the line non-customs at a local bike shop and the parents of rich students would purchase them as local transport, and when the students graduated they would just abandon them. I wish I still had a few left.....

Thanks Auchencrow! For this one, the toptube reads supercompetition and the "little paper label" that appears under the bottom bracket, reads pxn10e60, therefore, I think it qualifies. Plus, I have seen catalog scans advertising it as a px10. It really handles well.

I absolutely adore that bike - but would you mind setting the saddle in a less slanted position? The handlebars might be turned a little, clockwise, too

I remember that PX. It was the bike I always wanted when I first started racing. The seller had several NOS Peugeots, but that PX was really special. Too bad no member of my family could fit on it. Last month, though, I bought a 49cm 1985 PX off of some pickers. It was apparently being used as a wall hanging. The thing was unridden, and still had the original Wolber tublars. My wife has taken it for a few rides, and even though she does not ride much, she recognized that it was a really nice bike. Except for the brakes. Those rebadged mid range Modolos were a huge mis-step. Full Mavic, including bar, stem and seat post.

"Rebadged" to "Peugeot"? I actually thought all Peugeots came with MAFAC brakes?

The 85 and 86 PX came with a full Mavic road group and Columbus SLX tubing. In a way, these bikes were quite different that all of the other PX bikes. Even though the brakes said MAVIC on them in bold black letters, they were really Modolo Speedy's. I always though they should have at least used Pro's. The Speedy was a lousy brake and the quality did not compare to the rest of the group.
I never really cared for the pre 1980 PX bikes (sorry everyone) but the ones from the 80's have a place in my heart, especially the 85 and 86, probably because that is when I was bit by the bike bug.

This sucks

In the past two days I've realized through two separate threads that I must have:

1) A three-speed (30s Hercules looks like a winner)
2) A Peugeot PX-10

All thanks to you sorry bunch of enablers - and I'm not even halfway done with my most recent build

DD -
You ought to consider a few more French bikes while you are at it: How about at Peugeot PSV10, and a Gitane TdF and a Motobecane Team Champion?
- They'll make great foils for your PX10!
And in the 3-speed department, your "must have" is a 1930's Raleigh Record Ace.

BTW - We may be enablers but WE'RE NOT SORRY!
