winter is trying to return! We've had a pretty mild January so far, but we had 20 to 30 mph winds yesterday, and are expecting single digit (F) temperatures in a day or two. The weather was about 26F this morning with a bit of snow expected today, so I figured this was the sweet spot for the weather.
Well... it wasn't bad, but the roads got a layer of snow before I could get out. Except for some icy spots hiding under the snow, it really wasn't too bad.

and a shot with the bike, just in case anyone thinks I was out for a walk or something...

It ended up being a fairly decent ride, overall. I was just happy to not be dealing with high winds or frostbite.

I'll admit there is a slight possibility that the family marker weighs more than a Varsity (maybe) - but a Varsity frame and fork might outlast the marker.

When you gotta go... Re-Opening day of Cottonwood Pass pass (Almont to Buena Vista, CO). CODOT paved the pass ... smooth riding. I guess we all could have just stepped 20 feet into the trees, but this was calling for us. The CODOT crew was like, whatever... just hurry it up.

Somewhere near El Chalte'n, Argentina, on a bike trip (self supported of course), we saw these two push bikes. I guess they were from somewhere in Europe and had toured in the US, then went south. Don't recall where I learned about their trip, but wow, a push bike with panniers... over mountains, through deserts and so on, and for several thousand miles? Now that counts as hard core.

rode past Moog.

This could very well be near the end of seeing numerous train cars filled with lumber mill scraps / wood chips, as the local paper mill is shutting down soon.

Did the airlines lose your bike? Heard this rattling down the street. Delivery guy said it had come off a SW flight.

I miss the days when patches were provided to finishers of century rides and other cycling events.
I'm curious as to why the TOSRV 75 patch was sewn on backwards or designed that way.
Did he ride only the second day back to the start and this is a clever way to show what he did?
Or was the entire event done in the reverse direction, by the rider or by design?

The plaque was so badly faded I could barely read it but was able to make out "Greene Turbine". Found a couple of articles about it from 10 years ago and nothing more, apparently a failed initiative from a local entrepreneur.

Michigan is canoe country, and it's not rare to see them on people's cars... and every once in a while there's a wood-strip canoe. But I've never seen EIGHT of them together like that.

Anybody know what these are for? I was thinking Freestyle, them being small-ish, and pretty, and kind of old-fashioned in looks, but they have low seats and foot braces, not canted seats for kneeling.

Never mind, I just found them onlilne; the company is "Bowery Boatworks" in Ada, MI, and they seem to do their own thing, apparently meant to be fast all-rounders.
Purdy.

cheers -mathias

The rains returned to Peoria on Thursday, by way of a fast moving storm that produced high winds (80 to 100mph) across central Illinois and beyond!
I happened to get caught in the storm and ducked under a steel gazebo in Donovan park (steel gazebos are real too! ... plus they offer some protection from the lightning).

On a ride Saturday, I did get a look at some damage to the corn, where the outer rows were blown over...

The rains weren't done yet, as I saw this later on the ride...

The rains continued today, to the pleasure of the farmers and many others. I got rained on twice today, which wasn't great, but I had rain gear, fenders, etc., so no big deal.
