Yeah, I think the idea is that the moisture sits on top of the cork and has no way to get past it. Peugeot must have had some idea about keeping stuff out of the bottom bracket, but the long term effects aren't what they intended. @bulgie has a PX-10 frame that rusted through from the inside because of this. It's a sad problem when it happens.

I've already noticed there's a void in the brazing on one side of the chain stay bridge- my OCD may require me to get it re-brazed. If this were a 24" frame I'd absolutely be considering some 'Gugification'- braze-on posts for the Mafacs, at least....
Depending on the amount of the void, it might be wiser to simply put some spot putty in it before painting. Reheating a lug can create more problems than it solves. Most small voids don't mechanically weaken the joint by any significant amount.

RE: French steerers and modern stems - if you go with a Nitto stem, you won't have to file anything down. You probably WILL have to run a brake cylinder hone down the inside of the steerer to remove any corrosion, and you MAY have to file or dremel the inner lip of the top locknut on your headset. But Nitto stems are allegedly actually 21.9 mm diameter, and will fit in a metric 22.0 mm steerer tube. I've done it with my Allegro, which has a French Nervor 25.0 mm outside, 22.0 mm inside steerer and it worked nicely. DO grease everything before assembly, but you would do that anyway ...

That happened to my PX-10 thirty years ago… The seat tube rusted out, the tube broke, and it rode really weird all the way home… Paul Sadoff of Rocklobster Bicycles in Santa Cruz replaced that tube… He also changed the tube size to accommodate a non French seatpost… Yay… Since he had the torch going, he added braze-on mounts for Mafac Cantilever brakes, some fender / rack mounts, and a pair of water bottle mounts… All great improvements and the bike has not had any further issues…

Right, and don't chop the derailleur hanger off--the next owner might want a derailleur hanger.

Next owner…???…I’ve been the only owner since 1971… This bike is going straight to the Smithsonian after I die…

You may wish to increase the length of the rear cable and run both over the bars for smoother cable travel.

Not my bike; I just pulled that off the web. Mine is the usual white with black lugs. If I were to ever come across a yellow PX in my size for a halfway decent price I would probably buy it. They seem to be very rare. That also goes for these cool color combos:

The blue with yellow lugs of the early 60s PX-10s is definitely a contender!

Seems a little optimistic, price-wise, considering the one I started the thread about was mostly complete (was missing the saddle, pedals and FD) and came with an extra wheelset and a Campy Rally RD for less than this..... And the '72 I got a couple years ago (also complete) was just a little over half what this seller wants. I dunno, the paint looks decent, and maybe it's the what the local market will bear, but.....

Ha, well I guess the price reflects the 'presentation'- everyone knows that a red velour background doubles the value of whatever is sitting on it! Got to wonder though, does he ever get what he's asking.....?

You did say you wished it were bigger . . .

This is from the "Are You Looking For" thread, if you haven't seen it.

On further inspection, someone drewed off the rear hanger. What a bummer.

Tragedy, indeed. I was briefly considering a run down to NYC until I saw that.

Hell's bells, no wonder it's fifty bucks. And yet, my mind is awhirl with a scheme.

I am of two minds about this sort of thing. On the one hand, I think it's terrible abuse of a fine old bike to saw off its derailleur hanger. I'm always urging/advising people not to do it. But when I see a bike that has already been hacked in this way by some anonymous previous owner (who I, of course, condemn), my reaction is always, "hey, what a great opportunity to slap on a mounting claw and use any derailleur I feel like using." Does this make me a bad person?

Ha- nothing wrong with finding an opportunity/silver lining in a ‘tragedy’…. I was even thinking, ‘hmmmm, IGH….?’

Like this? Okay, it's not a Peugeot, and the hanger was never there, but it is blue.

Not bad at all - making lemonade, so to speak. I went down a rabbit hole of moving the setup on my International to that frame, it's built around an 8-speed IGH for commuting. But I'd want an older model with the slacker angles.

If it included the correct fork, and depending on just how much touchup isn't showing up in the pics, I would say that $250 is not outrageous. It appears to be in nice shape and the fact that Joe once scored one for $25 at a garage sale is about as irrelevant as it could be. Scoring an unusually fine deal does not lower the value for the rest of the market, except in wishful thinking.
