6001NK bearing replacement for hubset
I've got a front and rear pair of Sansin Gyro-Master Sealed Bearing hubs. The markings on the bearings say Japan Nachi 6001NK. I'm not finding any 6001NK replacements. I opened them up and replaced with fresh grease but the balls are worn and making noise.
I did find these bearings, 6001-2RS which would suit my purpose nicely.

I may have answered my question with further research. The letters after the numbers indicate the service code. NK means needle roller bearings. RS designates it is sealed with rubber, 2RS indicated sealed on both sides. 6001 is the width, diameter and inner diameter code.
Im going to take a leap of faith and say these will work fine. I looked at ceramic equivalents but I'm not sure the marginal improvement in rolling resistance is worth 10x the price.

Unless you want to service the hub often and willing to use very light grease, don't expect much improvement from ceramic bearings.

I would also stay away from ceramics, too much cost with little to no measurable gain.
For future bearing searches, some of the best bearings out there come from the guys at enduroforkseals.com They have nearly every type of bearing used in bicycles.

I ended up getting these for a couple bucks more. They are graded bearings at abec 3 and I'll have spares if necessary. Thanks for the help. First vintage wheelset in dozens that wasn't cup and cone.

Any reputable make 6001 bearing will do. You can find replacements at some well stocked bike shops, or more easily and cheaper, at industrial supply houses like McMaster-Carr, Grainger and Bearings Inc. Don't overbuy. Anything above abec 3 is overkill and ceramics are a waste of money for bicycle use.

Needle roller bearings are now identified by ID/OD. a 6001 equivalent is a 12/28 although a 6001 is 8mm wide and a 12/28 is 12mm wide.

your hub had Needle/Roller Bearings in it.. you have ordered Ball bearings.. they are very different in design.
contact an actual Bearing Sales outlet... i use Maguire Bearing company... there are any number of other outlets.
Ask for 6001NK and see what they have for you.
as to using a needle/roller bearing in a multi-axis load situation... ,,, ask about that too. See what the experts recommend..The 6001-2RS ball type Bearing may be a superior choice....
standard bicycle hubs are designed to withstand side and vertical loading equally... Needle/Roller Bearings are NOT designed that way. Side loading of needle/Roller bearings is NOT recommended.... Every time you tilt a bike while pedaling you SIDE LOAD the hub bearings....
